Calestous is a Professor of the Practice of International Development and Director of the Science, Technology, and Globalization Project at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He also directs the Agricultural Innovation in Africa Project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

- Potential breadfruit growing areas.
- Breadfruit produces more food per area than other starchy staple crops suchs as corn, rice, and wheat, with fewer inputs of labor and materials, such as fertilizer. Myraid advantages to growing a tree crop vs a field crop.
- Based on analysis of 94 varieties of breadfruit at the Breadfruit Institute, National Tropical Botanical Garden. Kahanu Garden, Hana, Maui. Protein levels comparable or better to other starchy staple crops, such as banana, cassava and sweet potato. Some varieties as good as rice and close to minimum levels provided by maize.
- Potential breadfruit growing areas.
- Breadfruit-based agroforestry system in Micronesia. Typical on hillsides. Studies report >100 useful plants, a 2000 year old system of sustainable agriculture. Important for watersheds.
