  1. When someone asks what you do for work, you're unlikely to respond, " I send and receive emails for a living." Unfortunately, it sometimes feels like that. Your Inbox represents a valuable flow of information. While you're in it, you are more valuable. The problem is that sending and receiving emails doesn't amount to a unit of work, in most cases. We have to leave the valuable information flow in order to "get work done". When we do this, we are "out of the loop" for a period of time. Further, we run the risk of becoming distracted, prolonging our absence from the information flow. Notes keeps you "in the flow" by bringing the information to you. We do this by including IM/presence awareness, Lotus Quickr personal content library integration, the Lotus Symphony Editors, sidebar plug-ins, RSS feeds, composite applications and widgets invoked from Live Text.

  3. Targeting 3 major areas that are near and dear to IT staff and administator’s hearts High Level goals of Domino 8.5 are to reduce total cost of ownership through three broad areas. First is simplifying Notes identify management Second is through contiuned reduction of storage cost and third is to continuing to improve the qualify of the service of Domino. we are doing that while we still maintain compatability with existing application and infrastrucures as a way for business partners and customers to further protect and leverage the investments in Notes and Domino.
  4. Lets go a little deeper in the 3 topics of Domino 8.5 improvement. First is simplifying Notes identity management Notes ID file is the key part of Notes/Domino Infrastructure. However we have make some changes to make administering these Notes ID lot easier with ND 8.5 version. In ND 8.5 there are 2 new features that customer has the option to use that will help minimize the impact of managing Notes ID. The first one is shared logon. It allow Notes Users to only remember single password. The windows password and still be able to get all the advantages of using the Notes ID for security mechanism. The Second feature is the ID Vault, and ths is the way to reduce cost for IT staff and admin by improving turn around time for lost ID's and forgotten passwords, and allow the IT and admin staff to focus on other issues as suppose to recovering passwords and IDs for users that otherwise might be unproductive.
  5. The second highlevel goal of Domino 8.5 is to reduce storage cost. Storage costs are consistently rate as one of the highest components of Domino total cost of ownership. Essentailly, this has to do with anytype of storage in multiple formats including Notes and Domino application, along with network traffic and along with backups. Notes and Domion 8.5 features will help dramatically reduced disk space usage especially redundant storage. By redundant storage, I will get into DAOS. DAOS stands for Domino attachment and Object Storage. This allows for single instance storage for attachments or objects to be present in multiple mail file or applications. Essentially what it does, if i send an email message to multiple people on the same server containing an attachment, That attachment will only be written and stored once on that server and everyone else will be able to access that through a reference. This way we will greatly reduce the amount of disk space taken. These attachments are stored as files, They allow for incremental backups, Its more resilent, there is no single point of failure, so you are not storing everything in one application. This is also easy for administrators, you dont have to monitor the file size, in this case here if you will be storing all these large objects in a notes application. Once it starts reaching a certain size, administrators would have to start creating additional copies and manually track them. DAOS avoids that as well. DAOS allows compression of the Notes documents. Essentially this is the rich text document within a rich text data within a document. This has also been brought back into Notes/Domino 8.0.1. If you are familiar with that feature, the document compression in 8.5 will be the same as 8.0.1 Typically the disk space savings that we have seen is around 35%. This does vary per users by use but it does contribute to significant cost reduction.

  8. The third high-level aspect of Domino 8.5 is to improve the quality of service. In Domino 8.5 we are providing the utility Domnio Configuration Tuner or you may be familiar with earlier name QuickTune. Essentially this is the tool that allow administrators to run this on their servers and look for potential misconfiguration or problems which could be costly eg: performance and security aspects. It allow administrators the capability to run the tool, look at the particular problem that were found and suggest possible solution and allow administrator the ability to note that and take action if required. The feedback has been very positive from design partner. IT staff chooses this as a big advantage for them to find problems before they are discovered in their environment, reduce their cost and further optimize their infrastructure.
