Mars is red due to iron oxide in its soil and has a thin atmosphere composed primarily of carbon dioxide. Only one third of spacecraft sent to Mars have been successful. Going to Mars would be an important part of the space program, but it is also very dangerous and expensive, costing around $20 million and requiring two years to travel there and back. Some problems with human missions to Mars include exposure to radiation, and limited oxygen and food on the long trip.
