Webinar: Designing a Test Automation Framework for Multi-vendor
Interoperable Systems
July 25, 2012
Question and Answer Session
Q 1: With an Automated Test Framework, what is the best method to address
object recognition problems?
Answer: This issue can be addressed by most of the test automation tools as they
have in-built support for object recognition. I would request you to elaborate
further and share the specific problem area related to the technology or tool for
object recognition.
Q2: We have a Flex based application. Any recommendation which tool to use?
Answer: It would be sensible to use QTP for test automation in this scenario.
Q3: How does your framework handle existing automated scripts being utilized
in QTP and in Selenium? Can we use an overarching driver script to handle this?
Answer: Since we do not have much details of your existing automation, it is
difficult to give a direct advice. However, in our case, we have implemented our
framework in different projects and used QTP and Selenium tools.
If you have QTP or Selenium automation, we can help you by writing a small
wrapper for the driver which can fit into our framework.
Q4: When does automation for regression suites become more useful or less
useful in cases where application code changes frequently?
Answer: Automation can be leveraged for functional testing, as well as regression

testing. If you use existing automation and update/modify it for feature releases,
it can help in the functional verification and will be helpful in the frequent code
change releases.
Q5: What is the recommended way to maintain configuration files in a test?
Answer: We discussed this in detail during the webinar.
You can achieve this via global configuration files that the driver uses and the
other option is to opt for functional configuration which can be associated with
test suite (application-specific properties).
Q6: We are looking for a good tool for testing client server application under
Citrix - Any recommendation!
Answer: You can try QTP in this scenario.
Q7: We are looking for Mobile Test Automation solution or strategy. Any
suggestions?
Answer: I can recommend Impetus’ Cloud-enabled Mobile Test Automation
solution - mAutomate here. It enables faster time to market and its cloud-
enabled infrastructure maximizes the test coverage - both in terms of
geographies and devices.

Test Automation. Click here!
Q8: Which is a better open source tool – Selenium or SoapUI?

- 3. Partners in Software R&D and Engineering
Answer: Both the tools are good. If you go by current tool version, I would
suggest using SoapUI for API test automation and Selenium for GUI test
automation.
Q9: We are into OSS business and communicating with multiple systems.
Please suggest a good test automation strategy?
Answer: You need to understand the interface of your applications and their tool
support. OSS business is versatile by nature and would require two or more
automation tools for optimum test coverage.
You can refer to the framework that we recommended during the webinar for
the test automation strategy.
