3. About CLA
• The Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) is
owned and directed by publishers (PLS)
and authors (ALCS)
• CLA sells collective licences to businesses
and institutions which permit copying of
limited extracts from books, journals and
magazines
• Plus post-hoc transactional licensing of press cuttings and
document supply
• Annual fee is distributed to rightsholders based on survey data
from licensees
• CLA distributed £67m to rightsholders in 2012/13
• Exploring new licensing models in the online environment

licensed solution (the Website Republishing Licence) where
possible
• Offers a means to legitimise inadvertent infringement online
7. Search and License – How it Works
Searches using Google and Bing APIs for:
• Copyright notices on press cuttings and document delivery
e.g.: Coverage is reproduced under licence from the NLA, CLA or other copyright
owner. No further copying (including the printing of digital cuttings), digital
reproductions or forwarding is permitted except under licence...
• Full text feeds (XML) from publishers
• Free-to-view and subscription web page content
• Custom text e.g. ‘download our latest press coverage’
(Full text is matched on a number of small extracts)
8. Search and License – How it Works
Then:
• Ranks results in order of closest match to search text
• Checks against ‘white list’ of licensed sites
• Saves date stamped copy of page and associated files
