access to safe drinking water
(Sanitation)
Halve, by the year 2015, the proportion of people who do
not have access to basic sanitation
Current Status: We are not even close to achieve these
targets, so a great improvement is required
5. “IMPROVED” MEANS…
o An improved drinking water source is:
“a source that by the nature of its construction
adequately protects the source from outside
contamination in particular with fecal matter”
o An improved sanitation facility:
“a facility that hygienically separates human waste
from human contact”

13. ROLE OF THE MEDIA
Active participation of media to meet the MDG sanitation target
1. Keep the discourse around sanitation and hygiene alive in the policy
domain, for critical actions to be taken.
2. Influence the general public especially middle classes to advocate for the
importance of improved sanitation.
3. Generate mass awareness on key behaviors and practices which need to
be adopted for improved sanitation.
4. Report based on qualitative and quantitative evidence from the field. (
UNICEF happy to support field visits and data analysis)
