WALK TO EQUALITY: ENSURING SAFETY
AND EMPOWERMENT TO WOMEN
Someday I will wish upon a star
And walk up where the clouds are far
behind
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney top
That’s where you will find me.
This is the attitude of a woman.
Women’s are the wealth of a country ad they
have contributed in almost every field and made
country feel proud at every occasion.
• In politics, president Pratibha Patil, UPA
chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Lok Sabha
speaker Meera Kumar etc.
• In socio-cultural field, Medha Patekar,
Arundhati Roy, Meera Nair etc.
• In sports, Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal,
Krishna Punia etc.
• At corporate level, Indira Nooyi, Kiran
Mazumdar, Ritu Kumar
However this is the one face of coin and on
the other side of coin is the hard truth of the
Indian society. There is systematic
discrimination and neglect from early
childhood of women's in India, which could
be in terms of inadequate nutrition, denial or
limited access to education, health and
property rights, child labour and domestic
violence. The fear of sexual violence has
been a powerful factor in restricting
women's behaviour and sense of freedom.
The struggle against violence is actually the
struggle against the unequal distribution of
power both physical and economic between
the sexes.

HUMANITY IS NOT BORN YET,
IT IS STILL IN THE WOMB.....
It is important to address the root cause for
the subordinate status of women in the
Indian society. Hillary Clinton, US secretary
of State, addressing the Delhi University
students on 20 July 2009 said that “women's
roles and rights are as important as any
issue we can list. Women are the key of
economic growth. It's been established
through research”. Men should perceive
women not as subservient being but as
empowered individuals who are equal
partners. The issues need to be seen in the
context of a patriarchal social framework
and a value system based on ‘son
preference', such as the son being
responsible for the carrying forward of the
family name, support in old age and for
performing the last rites. Further, the
practice of dowry and the tag of
‘Parayadhan' translate into daughters being
considered an economic liability. Women's
are not only entitled for survival but also to
a life with dignity, grace and equal
opportunities so that they can grow to their
full potential. There is an urgent need to pay
attention to the issues that concern this
section of population. The focus should be
on poverty reduction, gender justice, health,
nutrition, sustained awareness of rights and
eradication of social evils etc.
CASE STUDIES:
• CONSTABLE GANG RAPED IN LATEHAR
RANCHI : A constable was allegedly gang raped by five
armed men in front of her family members in Latehar on
25th
august 2013. The 30 year old was accompanying her
father and her brothers, who were carrying the bodies of a
relative from Ranchi to Garwah for cremation.
In udaipura, 12 km from latehar police station, men
carrying traditional weapons stopped their vehicle along
with few others on latehar garwah NH-75. The two vehicles
belonging to the victims were also stopped in the hold up.
Though the men intented to loot the commuters, on seeing
the women, they forced her out of the car! They took the
women aside and took turns to rape her.
The women had got a jobin police after her husband was
killed in a Maoist attack in attacked the convoy of former
Jharkhand assembly speaker inder singh namdhari. The
women stayes with her two kids in police line.
• DEEPAK CHOPRA VS JOYCE WEAVER
Writer, doctor and spiritualist Deepak Chopra was involved
in a set of hearings and trial case instigated by former
employee Joyce Weaver, who claimed, “that she was
wrongfully terminated because she had accused Chopra of
sexual harassment”. After only 10 minutes jury dismissed
the case and found Chopra innocent. Chopra himself
commented that, “may be it is my karma to dismantle the
Indian judicial system”. A system which he often referred to
as “one of the most corrupt in the country”.
CURRENT SCENARIO
• Why is India so bad for women?
Of all the rich G20 nations India
has been labelled the worst place
for women.
• Indians pray to goddesses in
temples but “abuse women in the
domestic sphere”.
FACTS, FIGURES AND STATISTICS
• Between 15%-76% of woman are
targeted for physical and/or sexual
violence in their lifetime.
• In Gautemala, two women are
murdered, on average, each day.
• In India 8093 cases of dowry related
death were reported
• 7 year old girl was raped in a train’s
toilet compartment in central India
• 221 rape cases were recorded in
Mumbai in 2012
• The rise in 2013 is to 30.33% from
19.25 in 2012
• 24,923 cases of rape were reported
last year
• Women and girls are 80% of
estimated 800,000 people are
trafficked across national borders
annually, with the majority (79%)
trafficked for sexual exploitation.
• Nearly 10 million female foetuses
have been aborted in country over
past two decades
• Of the 12 million girls born in India,
1 million do not see their first
birthday
India cannot claim to be a
modern society when its
women live in fear
KNAVES AND FOOLS DIVIDE
THE WORLD
REASONS BEHIND SUCH THINGS
HAPPENING AROUND US COULD BE
LISTED AS BELOW
• Peolple are not able to differntiate
between crimes and sins.
• Traditional attitudes towards woman
perpetuate the violence
• Social norms that prescribe men's and
women's role in a society and condone
abuse
• Low levels of education (For boys
associated with perpetarating violence
in future; and as a risk factor for
women experiencing violence)

• To do everything in their power to
take up radical reforms,ensure
justice and reach out with robust
public services to make women’s
lives more safe and secure”
• To develop state, tribal, territorial or local policies
procedures and protocols for preventing dual asserts
and prosecutions in case of domestic violence, sexual
assaults stalking and to develop effective methods for
identifying the pattern and history of abuse that
indicates which party is the actual perpetrator of
abuse.
• To plan, develop and establish comprehensive victim
service and support centres, such as family justice
centres, designed to bring together victim advocates
from non-profit, non-governmental victim services
organizations, law enforcement officers, prosecutors,
probation officers.
• To develop and implement policies and training for
police, prosecutors, probation and parole officers and
the judiciary in recognising, investigating and
prosecuting instances of sexual assault, with an
emphasis on recognising the threat to the community
for repeat crime perpetration by such individuals.
• Criminals should be handed over to the crowd
• Stop supporting films and serials depicting women
as sex objects
• Teach your son's and daughter's about fair and
respectful treatment of girls and women
