International Workshops
3. International Dance Retreat 3
You can relax at the pool, get a
massage or spa treatment, visit the
French colonies, dance, listen to live
music, watch the amazing dance for
camera movies, explore your spiritual
side at the Matrimandir, go to the beach
and so on and so forth. The possibilities
are endless.
The International Dance Retreat began as an
idea that sparked between the founders while
they were teaching some workshops at the Centre
for Research in Performing Arts (CRIPA) in
Auroville, Pondicherry. The energy that the space
exuded was so uplifting that they all decided to
share it with people from various cultural
backgrounds in India as well as people from all
corners of the world.
“We all have travelled far and wide, seen the
world and experienced different cultures. Nothing
brings you more joy than exchanging stories of
that one-cup of espresso that you shared in the
cobbled streets of Italy; or sharing that feeling you
experienced when you were on top of the Empire
State Building, looking over the city of New York.
Movement has always been that one medium
through which you are able to transcend any
cultural or geographical boundaries and express
yourself. So what better way to share our stories
than through dance? ”

Pondicherry & Auroville
1
Pondicherry/Puducherry better
known as ‘The French Riviera of the
East’ (La Cote d’Azur de I’Est) is a Union
Territory formed out of four enclaves of
French India. It was named after the
largest enclave of this four
‘Pondicherry’. It is the most important
tourist destination in Tamil Nadu for
national as well as International Tourists.
There is a Shri Aurobindo Ashram
nearby and it also has lots of
monuments, temples, parks and
mosques to attract tourists.
2
Located, not so far away is the
experimental township that
is ‘Auroville’. Started on 28th
February 1968, Auroville is a
universal township in the making, off
the coast of Pondicherry for a
population from around the
world. Auroville aims to realize human
unity in diversity. The Matrimandir – an
outstanding piece of architecture, is a
symbol of the Divine’s answer to man’s
inspiration for perfection. The entire
area surrounding the Matrimandir is
called the ‘Peace Area’.
“Pondicherry can be different things for different people. It could be a
tranquil serene place for people in search of spirituality, un-intruding
quiet for a romantic twosome or a trip down history for a student.”

International Dance Retreat - Faculty
Esteban Olives - Modern/ Contemporary Jazz Choreographer based in Paris,
France. He has worked and trained with world-renowned dance companies like the
Alvin Ailey Dance Repertory Ensemble, Hubbart Street Chicago, Houston Ballet and
more. Influenced by Martha Graham and Lester Horton, the Esteban Olives
Technique ranges from classical to jazz combining flexibility, strength, muscle force
and balance of the human body.
Wim Boussery started dancing salsa and tango about 25 years ago, in a period
salsa and tango was unknown in Europe and teachers were almost not to find in
Europe. He learned it from the best Salsa (Cuban) and Argentinean teachers who
visit Europe often. He has been teaching for more then 15 years now and has one
of the biggest schools in Belgium He has a very atypical, “easy going way” of
teaching, with a lot of attention to technique, but he also lets you freely feel the
music and dance to it.
Swapnil Dagliya’s dance education involves training and graduating from
Broadway Dance Center in New York City. He trained in Ballet, Jazz,
Contemporary, Hip-Hop and various other styles. He has also attended workshops
with the Pulse Faculty (Choreographers on So You Think You Can Dance) and with
the critically acclaimed Pilobolus Dance Theatre/Company.
Dolores Parisi, Artistic Director of B.Music Hip-Hop School in Bergamo, Italy and
part of the house of Ninja, has completed her training in the International Student
Visa Program in New York City and at the Performing Arts Academy MAS in Milan.
She has choreographed various dance productions, been on television, danced in
music videos and toured with various artists like American Idol’s Robbie Rosen,
Marina Star and Jim Lineham.
Aparna Nagesh has graduated from Broadway Dance Center in New York City.
She is also a certified Reebok Fitness Instructor and has 14 years of training,
teaching and performance experience. Currently she runs her own All Girls Dance
Ensemble titled ‘High Kicks’ as well as Showstoppers Inc. – a talent management
and entertainment solutions brand. She also teaches movement therapy at the
Lotus Foundation for Autistic children and is a registered member of the
International Dance Council, UNESCO.
