2. Main aims
• To eradicate poverty
• Involve civil society and the poor to formulate national priorities
• Include the rights of all citizens in national laws and policies
• Fight corruption and let the public know exactly how the tax money is being used
• Provide more high quality health care
• Remove tariffs and subsidies
• Increase aid to least developed countries
• Increase jobs for the youth
• Increase access to affordable
• Provide debt relief so funds can go to education
3. Its importance
• I think that the UN are focusing on this because
eradicating poverty and inequality (with things such
as education) etc. These things are defiantly a set
back in todays world. Many LEDCs are effected by
these problems. Global partnership isn’t just about
the diplomacy; more developed countries are helping
not just with the funding but with things like
education or youth job systems. They would achieve
this by sending people with experience over to help.
4. What has been done?
• 5 European countries (Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands,
Denmark and Luxembourg) are contributing 0.7% of their
Gross National Income (GNI) each year to aid developing
countries.
• 147 countries of the World Trade Organization (WTO) have
agreed to abolish all forms of agricultural export subsidies. The
World Bank estimates this will add 120 billion (USD) to
developing economies.
• The ratio of debt to gross national income has fallen and this
means that the debts in these poor countries is no logger greater
than income gained from their economies; thanks to the debt
relief program.
5. How will this be achieved
• More countries are trying to deliver on their promise
of donating 0.7% GNP before 2015:
• - France and Spain by 2012
• - The UK by 2013
6. 2015- Not enough time?
Only an additional $70 billion per year is need to aid the
MDGs by 2015. Countries are investing in things like arms
and domestic agricultural and in order for the deadline to be
met, governments need to change their funding priorities. A
2009 report stated that because of the economic crisis they
were moving too slowing to meet the goal but this was soon
resolved; if there were another crisis this goal won't be met.
Extending the due date my be a solution because many people
believe that this is not enough time; doing this would mean
that there still will be people in poverty etc.
7. Consequences
• Death rates in countries may increase
• Infant Mortality rate may increase
• The population in LEDCs without clean water may
increase
8. Alternative solutions
• A buddy system (a more developed country is in
charge of helping a less developed one)
• Make funding for MDG 8 a priority instead of
funding for other things such as arms
• Create awareness around the world through
campaigning
• Make it easier for anyone to donate by making
things like a “Kick starter page”
