1. Sportsturf Training for Greenkeepers and Grounds Staff around Ireland - QQI FETAC Accredited
This course equips working Greenkeepers and/or Grounds staff with the knowledge and
understanding for their Sports Surface in Golf, Bowls Football (GAA Rugby or Soccer), Cricket, Horse
Racing and Athletics Tracks
1 Historical development and requirements for modern sports surfaces including the role of sports
bodies
2 Construction of both natural and artificial surfaces for a range of sports to include site clearance
and earth moving, drainage, construction of playing surfaces and installation of ancillary services
3 Maintenance of natural and artificial sports surfaces
4 Evaluate grass species and artificial surfaces for their suitability for use in a range of sports
situations
5 Explain common pests, diseases and disorders of sports surfaces to include their cause, symptoms
and control
6 Carry out a range of maintenance operations on sports surfaces from the following: marking out,
cutting, aerating, compaction relief, topdressing, edging, scarifying, switching, weed control, moss
and algae control, nutrition, brushing, renovating and repairing
7 Operate and understand modern irrigation equipment suitable for Sports surfaces
8 Assess the quality of natural sports surfaces using recognised industry Performance Quality
Standards (PQS) including identifying any remedial actions needed
9 Compile a maintenance programme for a nominated range of sports surfaces both natural and
artificial
10 Implement procedures to create and maintain a safe working environment including safety
standards regarding lifting, carrying and handling plants, tools and equipment.

1 Explain the features of water based, sand dressed, sand filled and rubber filled synthetic surfaces
2 Describe how season, weather and soil conditions affect the type and frequency of maintenance
operations
3 Make markings on sports surfaces appropriate for a range of sporting events
4 Set out sports equipment appropriate for the rules of the sport and the standard of the event
5 Prepare playing surfaces so that they meet the quality and appearance requirements of each sport
and event

9 Operate appropriate safety procedures to create and maintain a safe working environment
including safety standards regarding lifting, carrying and handling plants, tools and equipment
