What is Aprendamos? An academic and cultural enrichment program for elementary students and their parents: Multiple Literacies Popular Education: Paulo Friere, “Banking Model of Education” Collaboration Curriculum: Tutoring – math/ELA for standardized tests. Thematic Units + Project Based-Learning
Who is our Audience? Public school (track system) 2nd through 5th graders Children of immigrants Speak Spanish, English, indigenous languages  Esperanza Elementary School Aprendamos
Previous Media Projects 1) VozMob 2) Newsletter 3) Media Workshops 4) Photo   Journals
Mutual Goals Integrate into existing curriculum. Multimedia: easy to learn, easy to teach Create projects that are fun and that students are proud of.  Implement technologies in simple, but smart ways. (repeatable and sustainable) Teach multiple literacies in the process      Projects are collaborative and hands-on.
1. Mini-Workshops: a. Timeline + Media Journal Project b. Mapping Project 2. Informational Video Project Pitch
- Connect to themes of personal identity, family narrative, and migration. - Import their own media (created in workshop or brought from home). 1. Timeline + Media Journal Project
Dipity and VoiceThread Family timelines. Personal timelines. Education timelines: elementary through college and beyond. Talk about media they shoot using cameras and cell phones. Dipity: Multimedia timelines.  VoiceThread: Group conversations around media.
- Could work well with social studies/language arts curriculum.  - Mapping and neighborhoods, “community detectives.”  - Integrate with VozMob platform.  2. Mapping Project
KCET – Departures + Maplib Departures MapLib
Scavenger Hunts + Vozmob Integrating with field trip or just in school yard. Upload pics to map and build digital “tours” Ideas:
- Use media from other projects. - Edit and shoot with students.  3. Informational Video
Challenges Sensitivity to cultural differences Multiple age groups, number of students.  Integrating with curriculum.  Time.
Thematic Units Week 3 – March 21st => Family (Immigration) Week 4 – March 28th => Family (Immigration) Week 5 - April 4th => Community (Health) Week 6 – April 11th => Community (Environmental Justice) Week 7 – April 18th => Evaluation (Social Justice)
Every Week Mini-Workshops:  Coming in every Tuesday (2:30 – 4:30)  Monday, Wednesday, Thursday – 1 hour devoted to working on projects.  Friday staff meetings

Aprendamos Project Proposal

  • 2. What is Aprendamos? An academic and cultural enrichment program for elementary students and their parents: Multiple Literacies Popular Education: Paulo Friere, “Banking Model of Education” Collaboration Curriculum: Tutoring – math/ELA for standardized tests. Thematic Units + Project Based-Learning

  1. Aprendamos, which is just one of the many, many programs to fall under the umbrella of IDEPSCA (the institute for the popular education of southern california).
  2. But it wasn’t always focused equally on both the academic and the cultural, so just to give you some brief history: So to begin with, Aprendamos was not actually part of IDEPSCA, but was started in 1992 as an intercession program run through a church. However, when a ton of funding was cut for their program, as is typical for many afterschool or intercession programs throughout LAUSD, the church was forced to pass it down to IDEPSCA in 2008. So when IDEPSCA took it over, they wanted to restructure it a little so that it could foster multiple literacies, and not just purely academic ones (especially as their prior focus was on standardized test prep). In addition to traditionally academic or critical literacies, how these can intersection with media-making and civic participation.Popular education philosophy (very similar to what Henry Jenkins talks about): very peer-to-peer, everyone teaches each other, b/c everyone has something to learn from each other. Not just opening up student’s minds and depositing knowledge.
  3. - Track system in which some students are labeled as “underperforming” => heavily intersects with ESL groups.

  5. First two are mini-projects that can be implemented as week-long exercises.-Last one will be a more involved endeavor.- Have thematic units: family/identity, community, and social justice. So starting with yourself and with each progressive scale seeing yourself as part of the big picture. Talk about these thematic units a bit more later. -Feel free to use all, some, or none of them, b/c again, this all about what you think is best for the students.

  7. - One of the programs in this larger project called Departures. -Doesn’t necessarily need to be super high tech! Departures is just crayons on paper.
  8. One of the teachers, Bernadette, had the idea of mapping where fast food places are. (Health subtheme)Nature walks with healthycity.org.
