Steam Boiler and its Principle
Steam boiler is a type of closed vessel that allows for heating of water until its
conversion takes place into stream. Boiler performs its functions on a simple and an
easily understandable concept. The process starts with the burning of fuel inside the
furnace and thereby, production of hot gases.
Later on, hot gases contact with water vessel, in which heating takes place for
transferring of hot gases into water and consequently lead to production of steam inside
boiler. Now, the produced steam passes into the turbine of a thermal power station.
Currently, boilers of different types have obtained their applications to perform different
activities, like operating any production unit, sterilization of equipments, sanitization of
specific areas and warming up of surroundings and similar others.
Efficiency of a Steam Boiler
Experts related to mechanical engineering in India have also explained about steam
boiler efficiency. Theoretically, efficiency of any steam boiler refers to the percentage of
the amount of total heat exported from an outlet steam in total amount of heat supplied
with the help of fuel or coal.
Steam boiler efficiency includes combustion efficiency, thermal efficiency and efficiency
of fuel to steam. The percentage value or efficiency in this case varies from 80 percent
to up to 88 percent depending on the actual size of used boiler. In addition, efficiency
also sometimes depend on few losses named as radiation loss, incomplete combustion,
defective combustion gas and similar others.
