Today, I am going to discuss the social media and why it is important to Northwestern Technologies. While social media may or may not seems like a fad that is going to come and go, we will see that it has been around for a long time and is probably here to stay.
Social media began with the humble email, but not as we know it today. It was originally a text file that sat on a server until somebody viewed it. From there, Bulletin Board Systems were created which were much like modern day forums, but you had to dial different numbers with your computer to reach different bulletin boards. This was all before the advent of high speed or even dial up internet. When you wanted to view something with your computer, you had to dial a different number for each website that you visited.BBSes were popular for a long time, but there was a company, called Beverly Hill Internet that was not satisfied with what you could do with BBSes. So they made a website called Geocities. Geocitiies was created so that users could create their own websites that the world could view. While websites and blogs are a dime a dozen today, at the time it was a very novel idea.Since Geocities was founded, many social networking sites have arrived, been popular for a while and waned in popularity, such as Myspace and Friendster. Even though websites come and go, one thing is certain, people are going to use social networking. If people are going to use social networking, that gives companies the opportunity to show their product to many users in many different ways.
But before we can understand how social media will benefit us, we need to understand what social media is. In short, social media is a tool that is a way to stay connected with people or businesses. At first, it was just used to stay connected with coworkers using email. It quickly became more than that with BBSes which allowed you to connect with many other people at the same time. This was a revolutionary idea, because nothing else would allow a person to connect with so many people that were not in their geographical region.Over time, social media became something more useful than connecting with coworkers. Eventually, it became something to connect with your friends and family. This was great to stay up to date with those people that you liked the idea of calling or writing emails to, but never got the chance to. With social media, you could stay connected with these people every day if you wanted to. Bands quickly caught on to the idea of a social networking site called Myspace. Bands started to use Myspace to promote themselves and it was hugely successful. After Myspace hit its peak, Facebook and Twitter became popular. We can use social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, to promote your business.
A few benefits you will get from using social media for advertising are increased customer interaction, increased customer loyalty and finding out what your customers are really doing. Before social media, to have customer interaction, you actually had to see your customer face to face or call them on the phone. But with social media, you have the opportunity to talk to your customers as easily as writing and email or updating your Facebook status. While this can never replace physical interaction with customers, it provides you with more time with the customer to sell your products.Social media also allows you to find out what your customers are really doing. Social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, allow people to see what everybody else is talking about. You can learn a lot about a person from their Facebook updates. A lot of times, they will talk about experiences they have with stores or businesses. You can learn from their experiences and provide better customer satisfaction rates.
The great thing about social media is that it is all about what you want and advertising with it is no different. With advertising via social media, you control how much you want to spend per day, click or view. The only limit is your budget. You can also control who sees your ad. If you only want males, 25-35, that are unmarried to see your ad, you can make that happen. Many services allow you to control who sees your ad geographically, interests, age range and many more options. While this may not seem pertinent to you right now, with a little bit of market research, we can figure out the demographic of the average business owner and target them with our ads.Additionally, with social media, you can see how your ad is doing at any time with just the click of button. If you want to know how effective your ad campaign is being, you can go look at your control panel at any time.
Looking at these statistics, you can see that a large portion of Internet users are on the Internet and using it regularly. This means for you that if you are not using social media as a part of your advertising, you are missing out on a great opportunity to advertise for your company. Let’s look at the actual numbers. (eMarketer)
While 51% of the Internet population seems like a big number, that is 1.11 billion users per month (Smith). That isn’t the amount of people that will see any given advertisement, but that does provide a gigantic cross-section of the population of the world that can be used for marketing. With that large of an audience, lets assume that one million people saw your advertisement, that is not out of the realm of possibility and a much larger than advertising with a local newspaper or in a trade magazine.
In conclusing, using social media will allow you to target the audience that you want to target. It will also allow you to save money because you are targeting your demographic and not a demographic of random people. Finally, it will allow you to grow your audience, because the type of person that sees your advertisement is the type of person that will be interested in your business.
