 Students studying Academic English should try to learn one list each week. Although there are
about 60 items in each list, many of them you will know already.
 To find a word, hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard, then press F.
What is the Academic Word List?
The AWL is a list of words which appear with
high frequency in English-language academic
texts. The list was compiled by Averil
Coxhead at the Victoria University of
Wellington, New Zealand.
The list contains 570 word families and is
divided into 10 sublists. Sublist 1 consists of
the 60 most common words in the AWL.
Sublist 2 contains the next most frequently
used words and so on. Each sublist contains 60
word families, except for sublist 10, which
contains 30.
To find these words, an analysis was done of
academic journals, textbooks, course
workbooks, lab manuals, and course notes.
The list was compiled following an analysis of
over 3,500,000 words of text.
The words selected for the AWL are words
which occur frequently in a range of academic
subjects, including the Arts (including history,
psychology, sociology, etc.), Commerce
(including economics, marketing,
management, etc.), Law and the Sciences
(including biology, computer science,
mathematics, etc.). This means that the AWL
is useful to all second-language learners who
wish to study in an English-speaking
institution no matter what their field of study.
The AWL does not, however, include
technical words which are specific to a given
field. Nor does it contain words which are of
general use and very high frequency.
Why learn it?
You will need to know this vocabulary if you
want to study in an English-speaking college
or university. In fact, because these words are
so common, they are even useful to those who
do not plan to go on to post-secondary study in
English. These are words that you will
frequently see in newspapers, magazines, and
novels, and hear on television, movies or in
conversation.
If you know the General Service List, or GSL,
which is considered to contain the 2,000 most
important words in basic English, and then
learn the AWL, your understanding of the
vocabulary found in academic texts will
increase by 10%. This is important, because
research shows that “If, instead of learning the
Academic Word List, the learner had moved on
to the third 1,000 most frequent words, instead
of an additional 10% coverage there would
only have been 4.3% extra coverage.”1

This site contains 285 gap-fill exercises to
review and recycle the general word families
contained within the AWL. These exercises
can be found on each Sublist page.
Sublists with links to exercises
Gap-fill exercises are an excellent way to
recycle vocabulary through different contexts
and can be used to broaden the student's
understanding of the range of meaning of
vocabulary. The online format of the exercises
allows students to get immediate feedback on
their answers.
Students can work through five different
exercises for each word family in the AWL.
Many of these exercises include different
derivations (parts of speech) for the given
word.
Students are encouraged to complete the
exercises for a given level before proceeding
to the next level.

 Academic Word ListCoxhead (2000). The most frequent word in each family is in italics. There are 570
headwords and about 3000 words altogether.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. How to Answer:
Step 1. There are 18 sets of 32 words (the last set has 27 words).
Step 2. Type your answer in each box. The table will expand accordingly if you have this in MS
Word. For a free copy of the MS Word document, email mr.jaime.aiu@gmail.com.
Step 3. In the boxes for Translation, translate the headword into your native language. Mark (n) for
the noun translation, (v) for the verb translation, (adj) for the adjective translation, and
(adv) for the adverb translation. If the word is a conjunction or a preposition, mark (con) or
(pre).
Step 4. In the boxes for Noun, Verb, Adjective, and Adverb, syllabicate with dashes (-): AD-JEC-TIVE.
Colour/boldface the stressed syllable like this: AD-JEC-TIVE. Write X for “no answer.”

Step 5. In the boxes for Negative, answers usually begin with dis-, un- or in- (disinterested, unusual,
incapable).
Step 6. In the boxes for Antonyms, the answers are words that mean the opposite (tall = short, long
= short, male = female, live = die)
Step 7. If there is no answer, type NONE.
2. Deadline: Email the instructor your progress according to an agreed schedule. You may email more
than one set at a time if you wish to complete the vocabulary sets sooner.
3. Results: Your SCORES and grades will be emailed to you within three working days after your
email.
4. Grading:
 This is a take-home, pass-or-fail mastery system. You get either 100 or zero (0).
 Your goal is to master (grade of 100%) all 18 sets in 10 weeks to get a 100%. Otherwise you
can work according to your natural speed. Grades will be computed this way:

GOAL: To assess mastery of the Academic Word List
Assessment of AWL Vocabulary Acquisition
1. At the start, a pre-test is required for all 10 lessons. The post-test date is decided by the student at the
start. Failure to take the test as scheduled is a minus twenty (-20) points from the test score.
2. The student must master each AWL Sublist before proceeding to the next. Mastery means a grade of
100% on a 20-item in-class post-test of an AWL Sublist.
3. An in-class post-test can be re-taken until mastery is achieved. A student may take more than one test
during a week, but subject to Rules #1 and #2.
4. The last day for an In-class Post-Test is _____________________________; during which final marks are
issued as follows:

See each word list: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.  Students studying Academic English should try to learn one list each week. Although there are about 60 items in each list, many of them you will know already.  To find a word, hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard, then press F. What is the Academic Word List? The AWL is a list of words which appear with high frequency in English-language academic texts. The list was compiled by Averil Coxhead at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. The list contains 570 word families and is divided into 10 sublists. Sublist 1 consists of the 60 most common words in the AWL. Sublist 2 contains the next most frequently used words and so on. Each sublist contains 60 word families, except for sublist 10, which contains 30. To find these words, an analysis was done of academic journals, textbooks, course workbooks, lab manuals, and course notes. The list was compiled following an analysis of over 3,500,000 words of text. The words selected for the AWL are words which occur frequently in a range of academic subjects, including the Arts (including history, psychology, sociology, etc.), Commerce (including economics, marketing, management, etc.), Law and the Sciences (including biology, computer science, mathematics, etc.). This means that the AWL is useful to all second-language learners who wish to study in an English-speaking institution no matter what their field of study. The AWL does not, however, include technical words which are specific to a given field. Nor does it contain words which are of general use and very high frequency. Why learn it? You will need to know this vocabulary if you want to study in an English-speaking college or university. In fact, because these words are so common, they are even useful to those who do not plan to go on to post-secondary study in English. These are words that you will frequently see in newspapers, magazines, and novels, and hear on television, movies or in conversation. If you know the General Service List, or GSL, which is considered to contain the 2,000 most important words in basic English, and then learn the AWL, your understanding of the vocabulary found in academic texts will increase by 10%. This is important, because research shows that “If, instead of learning the Academic Word List, the learner had moved on to the third 1,000 most frequent words, instead of an additional 10% coverage there would only have been 4.3% extra coverage.”1 1 Nation, P.   • 4. If you prefer online exercises This site contains 285 gap-fill exercises to review and recycle the general word families contained within the AWL. These exercises can be found on each Sublist page. Sublists with links to exercises Gap-fill exercises are an excellent way to recycle vocabulary through different contexts and can be used to broaden the student's understanding of the range of meaning of vocabulary. The online format of the exercises allows students to get immediate feedback on their answers. Students can work through five different exercises for each word family in the AWL. Many of these exercises include different derivations (parts of speech) for the given word. Students are encouraged to complete the exercises for a given level before proceeding to the next level. INSTRUCTIONS 1. How to Answer: Step 1. There are 18 sets of 32 words (the last set has 27 words). Step 2. Type your answer in each box. The table will expand accordingly if you have this in MS Word. For a free copy of the MS Word document, email mr.jaime.aiu@gmail.com. Step 3. In the boxes for Translation, translate the headword into your native language. Mark (n) for the noun translation, (v) for the verb translation, (adj) for the adjective translation, and (adv) for the adverb translation. If the word is a conjunction or a preposition, mark (con) or (pre). Step 4. In the boxes for Noun, Verb, Adjective, and Adverb, syllabicate with dashes (-): AD-JEC-TIVE. Deadline: Email the instructor your progress according to an agreed schedule. You may email more than one set at a time if you wish to complete the vocabulary sets sooner. 3. Results: Your SCORES and grades will be emailed to you within three working days after your email. 4. Grading:  This is a take-home, pass-or-fail mastery system. You get either 100 or zero (0).  Your goal is to master (grade of 100%) all 18 sets in 10 weeks to get a 100%. Otherwise you can work according to your natural speed.   • 64. Workbook Part 3 GOAL: To assess mastery of the Academic Word List Assessment of AWL Vocabulary Acquisition 1. At the start, a pre-test is required for all 10 lessons. The post-test date is decided by the student at the start. Failure to take the test as scheduled is a minus twenty (-20) points from the test score. 2. The student must master each AWL Sublist before proceeding to the next. Mastery means a grade of 100% on a 20-item in-class post-test of an AWL Sublist. 3. An in-class post-test can be re-taken until mastery is achieved. A student may take more than one test during a week, but subject to Rules #1 and #2. 4.
