Zhang (Noah) Zhiguang, Zuola Village, ChengGuan Town, Gansu Province 747500 China (zhang.zhiguang.noah@gmail.com)
G05 SHL1013 Professional English (12 November 2013)
Background & Urgency of the Problem
• On-time submission of homework in AIU
vary among students
• Homework is not always submitted on time
• AiU students are from various cultures with
various ways of time management
• Previous methods to increase on-time
homework submission have failed
• Poor homework time management can
affect academic performance

In two weeks, I will submit an A3sized poster with 10 pictures showing 10
steps to increase on-time completion of
homework.

• AiU students from various cultures can
understand examples shown in pictures
• Pictures can guide students in managing
homework time
• A poster display in each hostel room can
improve the frequency of on-time
homework completion and submission.
• Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory
(Author, 0000) and the bottoms-up
management principle (Author, 0000) can
help increase the frequency of constantly
clean hostel rooms.

Theoretical Background
Methodology
• The theory of cultural dimenstions claims
that blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah (Author, 0000, para. 00).
• The principle of bottom-up management
claims that innovations are more successful
if these originate from the user majority
(Author, 0000, para. 00).
• This section contains a step-by-step instruction
that others can follow to reproduce the same
results.
• The steps clearly show how the proposed poster’s
contents and design were planned, selected, and
arranged. For example:
1. The ten areas in a hostel room that requires
most attention will be identified.
2. A five-step cleaning & arrangement guide is
formulated to fit the needs of these ten areas.
3. The five-step guide is tested and revised with the
help of 5 students with the dirtiest rooms.
4. Photographs are taken and used on a poster.
5. The poster is reproduced and posted in each
hostel room.
6. An implementation schedule and names of
checkers are posted beside each poster.
7. Penalties and rewards are added to the
announcement.
8. . A weekly record will measure the frequency of
cleanliness and order in each hostel room.
Statement of the Thesis
Theoretical Application
Using principles in Hofstede’s cultural
dimensions theory and the bottoms-up
management principle to
design, distribute, and implement a visual
poster guide can increase the frequency ontime homework completion in AIU by 100% in
less than 30 days.
• In Week 2, the socialization stage, program
goals can be explained and submitted for
approval by AIU students who are
considered as influencers
(Author, 0000, para. 00).
• Benefits can help convince the influencers
to distribute the posters (Week 3) and to
implement the program (Week 4)
(Author, 0000, para. 00).
•
•
•
•
Week 1: Design and production of posters
Week 2: Socialization of program goals
Week 3: Poster distribution
Week 4: Implementation
Projected Challenges & Solutions
• Credibility Gaps – Some influencers may not be
credible to some groups of students. Solution: Seek
student solutions to address this problem
(Author, 0000, para. 00).
• Recidivism – Some students may revert to old habits
or cultural standards that negate the program goals.
Solution: Seek student solutions to strengthen
implementation methods & standards
(Buthor, 0000, para. 00).

45. Memorandum of Transmittal
• “I” focuses on
the writer. It can
sound selfcentered instead
of readercentered.
• For a neutral
focus, you can
use “This is to
submit/request/i
nform...”
• For a readerbenefit focus, you
can say “You may
be pleased to see
that....
• You will not use this
phrase if you consider
that the reader might
have other duties and
responsibilities. This
might be considered
demanding; try and use a
neutral phrase.
The first sentence is good
because it is related to the topic
of the email. The second
sentence seems not connected
to the topic of the email, so it
sounds fake, contrived, or
insincere.
• Some readers
disagree with
“please find” as
being inexact or
inaccurate as in
“find something
hidden or
missing”.
• You could say
“the attached
files include...”
This can imply a degree earned,
usually after graduation. For
now, use Business
Administration Scholar.
• You can use the
“you” to begin the
sentence and achieve
a reader-focused
language.
