Design Out Loud Course Introduction

  1. - Please “Like” our Facebook Page - We’ll discuss how design and social media are interrelated - And, how this class will position seniors for success in finding the right first job
  2. - We will work as a team to reach our personal and collaborative goals - Conveying a story to get buy-in - Create products we must get everyone involved onboard with a common vision. design, engineering, production, marketing, consumers, users, recyclers, re-salers - Social media we must get people onboard with our dream to get the word out, purchase goods, click. - As professions you will need to get people to take action!
  3. - We live in a time when anyone has access to professional design tools - Anyone also has access to the media tools, which are FREE/cheap. - How are we to tell who is truly a designer and an authority on key subject matter. and who is a poser? - It’s tougher than you’d expect! - Branding is key. Co-brand with your school! Clients! work! friends! Professional organizations!
  4. NO. But, you probably naturally get it! The big brands fueled by people who haven’t had the privilege of growing-up with social media in their lives probably aren’t entirely on-board; at least not like you are! - Although the fastest growing population on Facebook are people your parents age. - So, they aren’t far behind. - You have the chance to be early adopters and make names for yourselves early in your careers. otherwise, its the old route for you. and you’ll have to wait to be my age to become a senior designer and get opportunities to make this kind of head-way professionally. - The choice is yours; but one thing is clear - it is an exciting time to be starting out in your career.
  5. - The catch 22 of finding your first job - Everyone wants you to have experience; but no one is willing to provide the opportunity - Someone will give you a shot; eventually
  6. - Styling vs. syntax - Design thinking? Design research. Innovation! - You are no longer just competing nationally for jobs, you are competing internationally - Your education is preparing you for your first job and the rest of your career - You have been provided all the tools you need to succeed. Is that true for your peers in other places?
  7. - Tough economy; what’s new... - Corporate focus on globalization or is it a bad word? - You, afterall, do get what you pay for. - Collective knowledge base is creating pockets of knowledgable experts in places with low cost of living. makes for tougher competition locally. - Advent of web tools to support workers all over the world. used by startups and multi-nationals alike.
  8. - Put yourself in the places where these companies live - Try and anticipate what they need; put yourself where you are most needed - This takes experience to learn - But the root of this skill is storytelling - What is the plot of your story? Where do you fit?
  9. - Design and social media; sounds like a disjointed mix, right? - This class will be a mix of two disciplines; with the same fundamental goal - Tell a story to get people engaged, excited and onboard
  10. - Your job this semester is to get really good at story telling. - To create products we must get everyone involved onboard with a common vision. design, engineering, production, marketing, consumers, users, recyclers...everyone - For social media we must get people onboard with our dream to get the word out, purchase goods, click. - Both professions try to get people to take action! - Before we can take action, we must listen, learn and understand the root of our audience - We must intimately understand the syntax of our problem space before we can ever hope to manipulate it.
  11. - why do all this? - To get your first job; and the right first job. - One that will project you into the career you want; not just the one you can get... - The key to getting your first job, or really any job, is letting people know what you’re good for. - What is your core talent? - Pick one talent; the internet and hiring managers may only glance at your work for a moment - What is most memorable? A piece of work? An elevator pitch? - It might be different for different people! - How will you purposefully direct their attention? - Save the rest of your endearing traits and talents for a sub-plot of your story - This is how Sales works. That one talent is your hook.
