2. Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) –
U.S. Department of Defense (DoD)
Long history of technology and learning
Lack of interoperability – identified in 1997
Large training investment
Innovation in technology applications
Ability to scale – drive the market
E.O. 13111 - Founded to standardize and
modernize training and education delivery for DoD
Develop and implement learning technologies across
DoD and the Federal government
Collaborate with government, industry, and academia to
promote international specifications and standards for
designing and delivering learning content

Vision:
A collaborative environment of educational theorists,
practitioners, and front-line end-users jointly committed to
defining the requirements and identifying the best-practices of
the evolving, technology-enabled learning landscape.
Mission:
In support of the business goals and human performance
objectives of the DOD and its strategic partners, to theoretically
and practically inform the creation of new application profile(s)
which are capable of guiding the next decade (or more) of
training, education, and developmental activity which
uses technology as an enabler.
