3. Medicating our youth to treat ADHD is
necessary to help the child get back to
normal behaviors that will help them
lead a more successful and productive
life.
“I know it is not “If I don’t take the
mine, but I just had medication, I will not
to have it” be a nice boy and I will
(Pinkelman, 2012). hurt my sister”
(Pinkelman, 2012).
5. Having a child seen by a
Psychologist, a doctor of
the brain, will give you a
more in depth analysis of
their ADHD disorder. ADHD
can be diagnosed by other
professionals too!
Nurse Practitioner’s, a
Pediatrician, a General
Practitioner, a Psychiatrist, or
a Neurologist. In addition, a
Social Worker can diagnose
ADHD ("Who can diagnose," n.d.).
6. Pharmacological treatments have been found to be an effective treatment plan that is
safe and produces diminished symptoms of ADHD (Charach, Volpe, Boydell &
Gearing, 2008).
There are ways to diminish the
symptoms of ADHD.
Some forms of treatment may be:
Stimulant Drugs – Ritalin, Non Stimulant Drugs – Strattera
Adderall and Intuniv
Antidepressants – Wellbutrin
Behavior Therapy – behavior interventions, parent
education, social therapy
("Nonstimulant therapy and," 2005-2012)
7. STIMULANT DRUGS
*Prescribed first by doctors to
treat ADHD*
*Get into your system fast*
*Diminish symptoms of ADHD quicker
then other treatment plans*
*Can cause side effects*
8. NON STIMULANT DRUGS
*Not as harsh of a medication like
stimulant drugs on the body*
*Takes weeks or months to get into
your system*
*Can cause side effects*
9. Every day, millions of people in our
world take prescribed medications to
treat their ailments that cause them to
have side effects. Even though side effects
can occur, people still choose to take the
medication to make their daily lives
function normally.
SIDE EFFECTS THAT CAN OCCURE TAKING STIMULANT, NON
STIMULANT, AND ANTIDEPRESSANT DRUGS TO TREAT ADHD:
Insomnia Headaches
Upset stomach
Depression Nausea and vomiting
Racing heartbeat
Dizziness Tics Mood
swings
10. ADHD may treat their
symptoms through behavior
therapy.
Unfortunately, behavior
therapies are costly and that
is why medication is
prescribed first as
treatment.
11. Multimodal treatment plans are among
the most effective in our world today.
The treatment plan consists of a
medication, stimulant or non-
stimulant, and behavior therapy.
“The reality is that children diagnosed
with ADHD vary considerably in terms of
the severity and number of symptoms they
exhibit (Mayes & Erkulwater, 2008).
Not every medication in our world today
works the same for every person, so a
little trial and error needs to take place
in order to find the most effective
prescription for each individual child.
("Attention deficit hyperactivity," 2008)
