Case Study :: Tanger Outlets :: 2
History
Tanger Factory Outlet Centers, Inc. is a publicly-traded REIT headquartered in
Greensboro, North Carolina that operates and owns, or has an ownership interest in, a
portfolio of 44 upscale outlet shopping centers in 24 states coast to coast and in
Canada, totaling approximately 13.7 million square feet leased to over 2,800 stores
operated by more than 440 different brand name companies. More than 185 million
shoppers visit Tanger Factory Outlet Centers annually.
 Four Winds Interactive (FWI) is a leader in digital signage software, serving
multiple markets with a wide array of digital signage applications.
 Vertigo Digital Displays is an industry leading manufacturer of Indoor and
Outdoor Digital Displays for the QSR, Retail, Digital Out-of-Home and
Transportation verticals
 Boyd Sign Systems provides complete graphic support, fabrication, shipping
and installation of A.D.A. compliant architectural illuminated and non-
illuminated sign systems
Tanger Outlet Centers turned to Four Winds Interactive and its visual communications
software to implement 74 signs across 11 different malls locations in North America.
Tanger had a keen interest in a customizable solution that was attractive and engaging
to the consumer while still being functional and affordable.
Four Winds Interactive in turn engaged a key partner in Vertigo Digital Displays about
implementing a series of 72 inch high definition touchscreen enabled displays starting
with the National Harbor Outlet in Washington D.C.
Boyd Sign Systems worked with Vertigo in providing and assisting Tanger with the
exterior look of the displays in “building to Tanger spec” as well as supplying some
interior matching kiosks.
Objective
Tanger Outlet Centers wanted to create an appealing, intuitive, high-functioning
customer experience in line with the Tanger brand and mission statement.
“Tanger will continue to be a top performing retail REIT over the next three years by
focusing on operating and developing first-class outlet centers that deliver the
following”:
Case Study :: Tanger Outlets :: 3
 Significant savings to the shopper
 The latest and most popular retail brands
 A customer experience that attracts and
retains shoppers
The ability to facilitate consumer engagement
through Four Winds Interactive social media
software, interactive directory boards, dynamic
content, seasonal and daily promotions was key.
A “WOW” factor via the 72” Totem displays from
Vertigo Digital displays was critical to the overall
optics and customer facing.
Tanger set out to find a software solution that
would change the shopping experience. Not only
did they want to differentiate themselves from
other shopping centers, but create interaction for
their customers in a digital format that shoppers
are increasingly expecting and in turn looking for.
In creating a true destination point for Tanger
customers, the network was to feature social
media integration, way-finding, advertising, retail
specials and more to improve the overall shopping
experience and thereby increasing satisfaction,
spending and repeat visits.
Solution
Tanger Outlet implemented a visual communications network powered by Four Winds
Interactive to accomplish its goal of improving the shopping experience. Currently, 7
malls are utilizing visual communications featuring:
 A customized dual-sided 72” Totem display featuring Vertigo’s patented Direct
Air Cooling System (DACS), which reduces noise, installation and maintenance
served as an interactive directory board for shoppers to quickly and easily locate
stores throughout the sprawling outlet center.
 Several interactive directories with way-finding functionality to help guide
shoppers to their desired destination in high traffic areas navigate the center.
With hundreds of individual stores throughout the property, directories and
mapping help shoppers quickly and easily find what they’re looking for.
 The Vertigo Totem unit was able to offer superb dual side image quality and
reliability by using a high-bright 72” LCD screen with capacitive touch
capabilities, rugged wireless, ruggedized media player and full remote monitoring

features
 Boyd Sign Systems was able to add customized Tanger embellishments (top
arch) to each unit.
• A Social media kiosk with a camera for shoppers to share their experience and
add personalization to their visit. Tanger's social media sites are integrated
directly into their visual communications network, allowing shoppers to upload
and see their pictures in real-time. The 72” social media kiosk allows customers
to take photos, review their photos, and upload them directly to social media sites
for others to see.
• Promotions showcased with dramatic visuals which give shoppers the ability to
get coupons through QR code and or e-mail for various stores throughout the
outlet mall.
• 46" indoor directories in various mall locations.
“The entire FWI, Boyd and Vertigo team have provided excellent strategy, creative
design, customization and implementation of our interactive digital directories. The
majority of our outlet centers are outdoors which present very difficult environments for
digital solutions. From the extreme cold of our Canadian locations to the heat and
humidity of our coastal centers the units have performed as expected with no issue.
Tanger is looking forward to working with the FWI/Boyd/Vertigo team to continue to
bring the ultimate shopping experience to all our outlet centers.”
- Ashley Bell, Director of Interactive Marketing

Future
Tanger Outlets separates the benefits of their visual communications network into 2
areas: mall and shoppers.
Mall Benefits
Tanger has seen a decrease in costs, as they have been able to reduce expenses for
printing materials. Before digital signage, print costs were high and materials quickly
became obsolete because stores and promotions were changing so quickly. The digital
signage has also created another avenue to drive promotions to increase foot traffic to
those stores being showcased on the signs.
Shopper Benefits
On the customer side, Tanger has been able to improve the shopping experience. With
access to directories, maps, coupons and more, Tanger has created a more enjoyable
shopping experience and thereby leading to increased brand loyalty and repeat visits.
To create a destination point for consumers is to create evangelists and loyalty
shoppers.
Surpassed Expectations
Due to these positive results, Tanger plans to expand to new centers each year with at
least 3 more locations planned in 2015 alone. There are also plans in place to
incorporate 55” directories as an adjunct to the 72” Totem displays deployed to date.
Thus the future for Tanger Outlets is bright in trail blazing a new customer engagement
and aiding in their overall shopping experience which they are committed to.
“At Tanger, we’re committed to bringing you the ultimate shopping experience.”
When you're looking for the best value, the best brands and the best trendsetting ideas,
think Tanger Outlets.
