The phases of the Moon are caused by the Moon revolving around the Earth and reflecting sunlight towards our planet. Half of the Moon is always lit, but we only see the lit portion facing Earth, which changes throughout the Moon's orbit. There are eight phases that occur in a repeating cycle as the illuminated area of the Moon appears to grow and then shrink over the course of around 29.5 days.
