Themes/Messages The main theme of this film is friendship, it shows two old men fishing in the cold, not catching any fish but still having a fun time spending time with each other. It doesn't seem to have a particular message but its very heart warming and enjoyable, I think it merely tells the audience that friendship is important. The waiting for fish to bite could represent that long lasting friendships take time and patience.
Narrative The audience see the film from a third person perspective looking in on the situation. The time scale is quite hard to keep track of throughout the film but a fade out and in however helps represent a long period of time. It is very much a film that you have to follow yourself and interpret in your own way due to the lack of narrative, it makes it easier for you to read into what they are thinking, how they are feeling etc.
