17 MAY – 3 JUNE 07
The six cities of Scotland—Aberdeen, Dundee,
Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Stirling—will host
the country’s first nationwide international design
festival, promoting and celebrating Scottish design.
The Lighthouse will be the Six Cities Design Festival
Information Point for the City of Glasgow.
The Festival presents an imaginative programme
of exhibitions, events, keynote speakers, talks, tours
and more, taking place alongside two major continuing
programmes—Design into Business
and Learning.
The Festival’s national exhibition —The Scottish Show
07—is the most important expo of Scottish design ever,
opening at The Lighthouse on 17 May.
Design into Business is a programme for the business
community and designers alike. The programme will
demonstrate how good design is good business and
will include master classes, online resources, case
studies and international initiatives, culminating in
a major design conference.
The Learning programme focuses on education and
design communities, to encourage innovation, business
knowledge, creative entrepreneurship,
talent incubation and talent retention. It will play
a major role in connecting educational bodies
with the design industry.

How would you re-design your city?
Six Cities Design Festival asked Evening
Times’ readers what were the major issues
affecting Glasgow’s city centre and what
they would like to see redesigned. Issues
included litter, traffic congestion, pedestrian
facilities, public spaces and the river. The
most pressing suggestions were given
to four top designers, who have created
designs to respond to these issues. This
exhibition showcases their responses and
demonstrates how improved design can
impact on our cities and our lives. Look out
for our designers creating new spaces in
various locations across the city during the
Six Cities Design Festival.

spaces in their cities affect people

Between 1920 and 1978 Glasgow
Corporation sponsored over 50 films. From
the earliest, Glasgow’s Housing Problem
and its Solution, commissioned from Pathé
in 1920 to the last Glasgow’s Progress,
whose final images were taken by Ogam
Films in 1978, they provide a remarkable
view of the life, times and people of an
ever-changing city. Now The Lighthouse
offers a rare chance to see some of these
seminal works documenting 50 years of
Glasgow, its people, industries, power,
decline, demolition and re-building,
including Sadness and Gladness (1928)
Glasgow 1980 (1971) and If Only we had
the Space (1974).
And the Oscar for best documentary
goes to....you?

SHIFT
18 Aug –0 14 Oct 07
Level 4 Gallery 4
The focus of the exhibition is
on the zone that stretches between and
connects Scotland’s two expanding
major cities, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
It examines the potential for future
development, specifically the aspects
of sustainable movements between the
two cities; ranging from transportation
and commerce, demographics and
migration, settlements and built structures.
Explorations by national and international
architects and key decision makers will be
shown, projecting future propositions for
further discussion.
Part of the ACCESS to Architecture: The Lighthouse
campaign on architecture supported by The Scottish
Executive. The exhibition is developed in collaboration
with Sust. - The Lighthouse on Sustainability.
Foreign Bodies
28 Mar – 7 May 07
Level 4 Circulation
Foreign Bodies tells a story
through text and photography about
the history of two cities - Marseille and
Glasgow. There is much that they share
in common, not least a passion for politics,
football, alcohol, the weather and verbal
trickery. Moreover they are connected
historically in their roles as imperial and
industrial cities. Imagined as an illustrated
dialogue, the two cities reminisce about
their rise and subsequent decline,
reflecting on the contemporary attempts
to restructure their economies and give
them a face-lift.
This project was originally commissioned by The
Lighthouse as part of Made in Scotland: A series
of events across Marseille celebrating Scotland’s
Architecture in October 2004.
