GUNDERSEN NATIONAL
CHILD PROTECTION TRAINING CENTER
2014 TRAINING CATALOG
The Gundersen National Child Protection Training Center
(Gundersen NCPTC) works to end all forms of child abuse,
neglect and exploitation through training, education,
advocacy, prevention and awareness, providing care and
treatment for children, families and adult survivors.
Since its inception in 2003, more than 100,000 child
protection professionals have been trained in all 50 states
and 17 countries. Training topics include: child abuse,
investigations, forensic interviewing and multidisciplinary
team training. Gundersen NCPTC actively strives to prepare
future front-line professionals to recognize and report
the abuse of children, through the implementation of
Gundersen NCPTC model curricula. Furthermore, the
staļ¬€ provides technical assistance to child protection
professionals and victim/survivor assistance on an
ongoing basis. They also publish monthly and quarterly
newsletters and distribute them to tens of thousands of
child protection professionals.
In February 2013, NCPTC merged with Gundersen Health
System (GHS). Gundersenā€™s Integrated Center for Education
enhances NCPTCā€™s ability to train professionals in the field.
This premier conference facility oļ¬€ers:
ā€¢ The latest in communications technology
ā€¢ Distance learning capabilities
ā€¢ Support facilities and personnel on site
ā€¢ Seating for up to 225 people
ā€¢ A central and beautiful location in southwest Wisconsin
While this partnership brings change, Gundersen
NCPTCā€™s mission remains the same. In fact, it means
Gundersen NCPTC is that much stronger and that
much closer to its goal of ending child abuse.

Training Centers
Gundersen NCPTCā€™s main training center is located on the
Winona State University (WSU) campus. This state-of-the-art complex
includes five mock court rooms, four forensic interview training rooms
and a mock house in which simulated child abuse investigations are
conducted. As part of the collaboration with WSU, Gundersen NCPTC
staļ¬€ and WSU faculty have developed the model undergraduate
minor curriculum and certificate program entitled Child Advocacy
Studies (CAST).
NorthWest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) currently
serves as Gundersen NCPTC's Southern Region Training Center.
The Melba Shewmaker Center opens January 2014 and includes
mock court rooms, interactive video and flexible use space. This
center will provide training, publications and the CAST curriculum
implementation, as well as technical and forensic interviewing
assistance, specifically to the 15 southern U.S. states.
New Mexico State University (NMSU) serves as Gundersen
NCPTCā€™s Southwestern Region Training Center. NMSU is an ideal
partner due to the universityā€™s extensive community outreach, the
quality of its CAST curriculum and NMSUā€™s experience in delivering
training and services over large, mostly rural distances, as well as its
experience in working with underrepresented and limited resource
populations. NMSUā€™s region includes New Mexico, Arizona,
Southern California and West Texas at its initial launch, and
may expand to serve other states.

Prevention and education programs
Center for Eļ¬€ective Discipline
The Center for Eļ¬€ective (CED) supports Gundersen NCPTCā€™s mission
of ending child abuse by providing educational information to the
public about the eļ¬€ects of corporal punishment on children and
alternatives to its use.
CED advocates for ending corporal punishment in schools in all 50
states. Currently, 31 states prohibit this practice. If you want to help
stop this punishment in the remaining 19 states, please contact us.
Important events for the CED program include:
ā€¢ April 23-30, SpankOut Day USA and SpankOut Day International.
SpankOut Day USA is sponsored by Gundersen NCPTCā€™s CED
program. April 30 is a day when all parents, grandparents,
guardians and people working with children are encouraged to
refrain from hitting, smacking and spanking children. More than
2,500 informational events on positive child discipline have been
carried out by organizations observing SpankOut Day USA and this
number continues to grow. Visit stophitting.org/spankout for
ideas.
For additional information, visit stophitting.org or contact
info@stophitting.org.

Jacob Wetterling Resource Center
The Jacob Wetterling Resource Center (JWRC) became a program
of Gundersen NCPTC in February 2010. The merger was an eļ¬€ort to
combine the groupsā€™ resources and strengthen common eļ¬€orts to
ensure every child grows up in a healthy, safe worldā€”a world free
from abuse, abduction and exploitation. JWRC was originally founded
in 1990 by Patty and Jerry Wetterling following their sonā€™s abduction
in Minnesota. JWRC focuses on educating families, children and
community members while providing victim assistance on cases of
missing people and exploited children.
Informing the community:
ā€¢ JWRC oļ¬€ers webcasts. These online presentations are open to
community leaders, parents, etc.
ā€¢ If you would like to schedule a speaker for a group of teens,

Gundersen National Child Protection Training Center Booklet

  • 1. GUNDERSEN NATIONAL CHILD PROTECTION TRAINING CENTER 2014 TRAINING CATALOG
  • 2. The Gundersen National Child Protection Training Center (Gundersen NCPTC) works to end all forms of child abuse, neglect and exploitation through training, education, advocacy, prevention and awareness, providing care and treatment for children, families and adult survivors. Since its inception in 2003, more than 100,000 child protection professionals have been trained in all 50 states and 17 countries. Training topics include: child abuse, investigations, forensic interviewing and multidisciplinary team training. Gundersen NCPTC actively strives to prepare future front-line professionals to recognize and report the abuse of children, through the implementation of Gundersen NCPTC model curricula. Furthermore, the staļ¬€ provides technical assistance to child protection professionals and victim/survivor assistance on an ongoing basis. They also publish monthly and quarterly newsletters and distribute them to tens of thousands of child protection professionals. In February 2013, NCPTC merged with Gundersen Health System (GHS). Gundersenā€™s Integrated Center for Education enhances NCPTCā€™s ability to train professionals in the field. This premier conference facility oļ¬€ers: ā€¢ The latest in communications technology ā€¢ Distance learning capabilities ā€¢ Support facilities and personnel on site ā€¢ Seating for up to 225 people ā€¢ A central and beautiful location in southwest Wisconsin While this partnership brings change, Gundersen NCPTCā€™s mission remains the same. In fact, it means Gundersen NCPTC is that much stronger and that much closer to its goal of ending child abuse. 1
  • 3. Training Centers Gundersen NCPTCā€™s main training center is located on the Winona State University (WSU) campus. This state-of-the-art complex includes five mock court rooms, four forensic interview training rooms and a mock house in which simulated child abuse investigations are conducted. As part of the collaboration with WSU, Gundersen NCPTC staļ¬€ and WSU faculty have developed the model undergraduate minor curriculum and certificate program entitled Child Advocacy Studies (CAST). NorthWest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) currently serves as Gundersen NCPTC's Southern Region Training Center. The Melba Shewmaker Center opens January 2014 and includes mock court rooms, interactive video and flexible use space. This center will provide training, publications and the CAST curriculum implementation, as well as technical and forensic interviewing assistance, specifically to the 15 southern U.S. states. New Mexico State University (NMSU) serves as Gundersen NCPTCā€™s Southwestern Region Training Center. NMSU is an ideal partner due to the universityā€™s extensive community outreach, the quality of its CAST curriculum and NMSUā€™s experience in delivering training and services over large, mostly rural distances, as well as its experience in working with underrepresented and limited resource populations. NMSUā€™s region includes New Mexico, Arizona, Southern California and West Texas at its initial launch, and may expand to serve other states.
