CENTER FOR ARABIC STUDY ABROAD
CENTER FOR MIDDLE EASTERN STUDIES
HARVARD UNIVERSITY
June 28, 2016
This is to certify that Mr. Jonathan Endelman participated as a CASA I fellow with the Center for
Arabic Study Abroad (CASA) at the American University in Cairo (AUC) during the 2010 summer and
fall semesters. CASA offers an inter-university program for the study of Colloquial Egyptian and
Literary Arabic at AUC, and is currently coordinated from CASA’s headquarters at Harvard University.
Due to the security situation resulting from the revolution in Egypt during the 2011 spring semester,
the CASA program officially closed. Fellows enrolled in an alternate program delivered by CASA’s host
institution, the Arabic Language Institute at AUC, to complete their year of study in Cairo. The
curriculum of this program, for all intents and purposes, is identical to the CASA program that fellows
were participating in for 2010.
Mr. Endelman received the following CASA I grades:
Summer 2010
Egyptian Colloquial Arabic A-
Modern Standard Arabic A
Fall 2010
Egyptian Colloquial Arabic II B+
Reading and Writing A
Listening and Speaking A-
Arabic Language Institute (ALI) – AUC Grades:
Spring 2011
Advanced Egyptian Colloquial Arabic A-
Advanced Writing 1 A
Palestinian Literature 2 A
Actual classroom instruction consists of 20 hours per week during the seven-week summer term and
each fifteen weeks for the fall and spring terms. As a guideline for an American university, this has
been previously determined to be approximately four credit hours for each course listed.
