Quest 1
1. Joshua Millington
In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
I have successfully researched, planned and constructed a music video that
confidentially abides to the conventions of a real media product; yet also
challenges the forms of this media platform. I have accomplished this through
vast product research into the framework of my media product, by dissecting and
analysing the micro-aspects of current music videos (such as how does the:
editing, mise-en-scene and cinematography contribute to establishing a
performance, narrative or conceptual product, or form a hybrid). My media
product is a hybrid music video, to the song Lover of the Light by the folk-rock
group, Mumford & Sons.
To create an authentic realistic look, I encouraged a range of settings; I felt this
was significance not only because it was a common conventional trend in my
product research, but it enhances the overall aesthetics and excitement. The
intriguing element of using various locations (such as a nature trail,
photography studio, recording studio styled room and a stage), is that they each
bring a different aspect of concept. For example on the nature trail we were able
to get a lot of shots centred around light, which is a key theme, as it is parallel to
the title, lyrics and chorus of the song. Even from my first ancillary task, where I
created a digipak, it is evident about my use of setting to evoke greater ideology,
for example on the front cover of this album I used a wide empty road to connote
a sense of being lost, escaping and searching.
However I believe that the overall look of a media project in terms of the mise-
en-scene is defined by the props and costume, as they act as an instant
suggestion to the genre, mood and idea of the text. Therefore, in terms of my
costume, I attempted to represent an authentic conventional look for the modern
folk-rock hybrid-genre; therefore I looked up popular contemporary artists of this

hybrid-genre, such as Band of Horses, Frank Turner, Fleet Foxes, Of Monsters &
Men, Neutral Milk Hotel, She & Him, My Morning Jacket, and Mumford & Sons.
This helped establish a strong idea of how I can use my costumes to indulge into
the genre and make this media product abide to the conventions of already
existing music videos.
In terms of cinematography and editing, research from existing media products
was vital to reconstruct a similar atmosphere; this was done by adopting similar
shot types and editing techniques. For example in the original media text there
was a lot of use of extreme long shots of pastoral the settings:

The majority of shots in the original text are also close ups, which convey lots of
poignancy. Therefore I took this idea and moulded it into my text.
My representation of the text.
The original text.
On the whole, the narrative is straightforward, linear and simple. However it is
elliptical, to some extent, as we skip through sections of time quite quickly. This
is a common conventional technique of this genre, which I learnt from my
research tasks.
The genre of my music video is very obvious, as I’ve abided to the stereotypical
conventions of the hybrid genre of folk/rock/classic indie. For example in the
mise-en-scene of the screen grab above, it obvious it is of the folk genre: high key
lighting, pastoral setting, isolation, facial hair and the setting.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
This screen grab reflects the rock genre, as it is a convention for there to be a
performance in a text of the rock genre. The use of the guitar, the hair style and
the low-key-lighting are also conventional icons of the rock genre.
The sub-genre of classic indie is also captured in obscure slight abstract
atmosphere caused by the opening of the text.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In my music video, there is a
similar use of distorted colouring, isolation, solo performance and
cinematography.
To conclude, my media texts has the conventions of a real media text, because it
fits its hybrid-genre. This gives the text a real feel. It has been successful in
combining the different codes and conventions of different genres, yet also
challenged them; as the genres do juxtapose each other, yet also relate.
