This document discusses energy and context monitoring projects conducted by Moixa Technology. It summarizes Moixa's research experience across multiple smart grid projects involving smart meter integration, demand management, microgrids, and behavioral change. One project discussed monitors residential energy use and behavior in 45 homes in Southend-on-Sea. The monitoring system collects electricity, gas, temperature, humidity, and other data. Analysis of this data provides insights into device usage and identifies opportunities for peak demand shifting through behavioral prompts or automated controls. The document also outlines Moixa's work using battery storage to shift load away from peaks and integrate more solar power through grid services and peak shaving.

5. Software based – DC monitoring
Inference - Network Scan (MAC address tracking)
Explicit - DC Socket Monitoring (£) but future standard
Precise DC device use provides real-time occupancy, Device
adoption, extra data for AC Fusion/Disaggregation
6. Hardware based - monitoring
Standard e.g. Alert Me : 10 sec
data, single point of measurement,
low cost, self install, large data set
already available.
Smart Meter: accurate billing data,
default is 1/2 hour data, possible to get
Khz data for disaggregation (smarts
needed in home). Standard, reasonably
low cost.
Bespoke monitoring solution: When
you need a system that delivers against
specific objectives there is often no
choice but to design a bespoke system.
7. Southend-on-Sea – RHS project
Project to test innovative retrofit energy efficiency technology
45 homes, single location, social landlord
Moixa developed monitoring:
- Electricity (5 channels) – clamp on meter + mains voltage
- Pulse count input for gas meters
- Temperature & Humidity
- CO2 in some houses
- Remote Temp / Light / opening (868Mhz RF)
- Custom – air flow / additional CO2 etc in some houses
10. What is the data used for?
Analysis / atatus / alerts
App specific language,
allows coding for alerts
around very specific
conditions: since there
is a support resource we
will engage individuals in
goal setting.
We will see what works.
11.
12. Prompts to action
Zigbee linked alert light – looked at a few
alternatives with the residents, but this was
judged by them to be their preferred.
13. Cost comparison
RHS project: £1000 approx per house
Dev cost: £500, hardware £300, install £200
Some interface software costs on top
Alert Me: £50 per house?
Smart Meter: £200 per house? Including Khz?
EST study: £4000 per house approx
14. But what we need to know is…
We have been looking at what you can actually
have an effect on, what parts of the load in a
typical home is there any point in attempting to
modify, as it strikes us this is what you want to
know….
Maybe Probably No Point
15. DSP Change.. Reasonable?
Lighting Please turn out lights until day
Audio Please watch later on iplayer?
Visual
ICT Please don’t go on-line yet?
Cooking How about a cold salad instead?
Washing No?. At least wash a bit later?
16. We are testing novel retrofit
Address:
- Smart appliances slow adoption
- Low awareness of ‘smart/delay’ features on
appliances
- Fixed use cycles (cleaners, workers, mothers)
With novel retrofit device to improve:
- Awareness
- Inventory of DSM washing appliances
- Solar run hours or shifted hours on DSM
