More than Just Lines on a Map: Best Practices for U.S Bike Routes
Fidelity, promise keeping, loyalty to patients and
1. Fidelity, promise-keeping, loyalty to patients and impaired professionals Should a colleague be reported for being dishonest and stealing? What steps should be taken?
2. What is the problem? Patients are being shorted maintenance prescriptions in order for the pharmacy to save money A fellow pharmacist, the owner, is stealing from insurance companies and his patients The pharmacist that is shorting the pills does not feel that anything is wrong (HOW SAD) Patients are being told that there is a problem with pills being shorted
3. ETHICAL ISSUE? NONMALEFICENCE veracity Is this pharmacist “doing no harm” He is actually increasing the risk for harm to his patients The pharmacist is definitely not telling the truth to his patients What is he is reported for Medicare fraud? He is billing for pills that are not there. It would have been the patients word against his, until now. He has admitted to his colleague. He is even lying to himself that no one will be harmed.
4. What about the fellow pharmacist’s ethics? Beneficience What benefit is it to her patients if she does not speak up? She morally knows that this is wrong and needs to report it in order to protect her patients from harm. Any decision made by Lorraine will affect her patients. Either it will benefit them or harm them.
5. Is this not a legal issue? ◊ What if Lorraine reports Glenn, will this not end his career as a pharmacist? ◊ Is there not more to this situation than shorting pills? There is the potential that Glenn may be doing more with the stolen meds—something illegal!!! ◊ Could Glenn be arrested for this? Should Lorraine notify the law or the State Board of Pharmacy? ◊ Is there a mentor that can assist/guide Lorraine through this situation? ◊ Could Lorraine lose her job by reporting this? Will Lorraine have to appear in court?
6. Medicare's Most Wanted - Report Medicare FraudHuge rewards paid to Medicare fraud whistleblowers. Have an attorney file a qui tam action on your behalf and receive a million dollar reward from the federal government. For information on blowing the whistle please visit our newsfeed sponsor www.usawhistleblower.com or call toll free 1-888-482-6825. This may help assist Lorraine in making her decision on reporting Glenn or not. Besides, According to the Pharmacist Code of Ethics, “A Pharmacist acts with honesty and integrity in professional relationships. A pharmacist respects and values the abilities of colleagues.” (APA, 2009) Should Lorraine not be honest with Glenn and admit to him that this is not any ability that she can respect. If his values are as poor as stealing from budgeted senior citizens, what else is this pharmacist capable of? What if Lorraine reporting Glenn leads to him straightening up, with potential probation, which could save his business?
