Study Summary

Vericom has partnered with Montana State University (MSU) in a study funded by the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation to use ChannelCare healthcare digital signage to communicate the importance of radon testing and
drive renters and homeowners alike to purchase radon test kits. (Radon is a naturally occurring, cancer-causing
radioactive gas and the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., according to the U.S. Surgeon General. The
only way to know the level of radon in a residence is through radon testing. There are no signs associated with
the presence of radon.)

Radon testing is not mandated in the U.S., and due to low Montana literacy rates, nursing intervention along with
ChannelCare digital signage aims to increase radon knowledge and encourage people to complete radon testing.

MSU launched ChannelCare in August 2011 at three Women Infant and Children (WIC) centers in rural Montana.
The WIC program provides supplemental nutrition to low income pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women
and children. One of the three locations is a control center, intentionally not disseminating radon-testing
information through ChannelCare, in order to track the results of communication via digital signage. The
messaging provided on ChannelCare high-definition monitors is educational, visually engaging, graphic, and
animated.

Demographics served

• Flathead and Gallatin counties, Montana
• WIC lower-income women, infants, and
    children, with low health literacy
• Annual income for family of 4 less than $39,200
    (185% below federal poverty guidelines)
• Approximately 5,000 people/year seen at these Click here to view
    3 centers radon video
• 10% are ethnic minorities (versus 3.7% in the
    general WIC population nationwide)

Why ChannelCare was selected for this study

• ChannelCare’s visually engaging
communications are appropriate for rural, low-income audiences and help improve health literacy while
empowering viewers to increase the use of preventive services.

• ChannelCare makes sense of complicated terminology associated with understanding radon gas. Messages
help “demystify” indoor radon exposure to help achieve the goals of Healthy People 2020.

• ChannelCare is more effective than print material as media rich, high-definition messages grab audiences
attention and appeal to the viewers’ senses. Unlike print material, ChannelCare messages can be updated in
    real time.

• ChannelCare helps increase message retention by ensuring message relevancy. By delivering messages in
WIC waiting rooms, ChannelCare provides standard, consistent messaging to all audiences and does not
place a burden on the provider-client interaction.

• ChannelCare encourages people to purchase subsidized radon test kits at a nearby Environmental Services
office, and leads people to ask questions, make phone calls, sign up for programs, visit web sites, get
    involved, and more.

• Vericom’s resources and support are extensive and comprehensive. Hospitals and other healthcare facilities
seeking digital signage have found it difficult, it not impossible, to find other vendors who provide a
comparable solution with the same level of service, consultative support, responsiveness, and readily-
    available relevant content.

Results to date

• Increase in WIC audiences purchasing radon test kits

“We believe that ChannelCare will help make a difference in the safety of our WIC
audiences by increasing the use of radon testing kits. Early results show a
dramatic increase in the percentage of visitors purchasing the kits.”

(results of study to be published Summer 2012)

• Increase in registration for colonoscopies

Fifty (50) free colonoscopies were available at one WIC center and promoted on ChannelCare. All were rapidly
distributed as a result of the messaging. The messaging also led to an increase in word-of-mouth referrals,
prompting additional registrations.
