Hausauer, MSN, RN2, Christopher P. Newman, MPH 1 , and Robert L. Vogel, PhD 3 Abstract Literature provides evidence that school attendance correlates with academic performance and student success. Influenza is a contributing factor to school absences. Primary prevention for influenza includes immunization. School-located influenza vaccine (SLIV) programs provide greater access for students to be immunized. A retrospective review of preexisting data from four academic years was conducted to examine the relationship between SLIV participation and absenteeism among students at eight public elementary schools in Effingham County, Georgia. Results identified differences in average frequency of absences between SLIV and non-SLIV years as well as between SLIV participants and nonparticipants for the 2 SLIV years. Implications for practice include the potential for increased herd immunity among students, which may also extend to other parties within the school community and at home, thus promoting overall wellness and future student success. Missing even a few days of school, regardless of cause, can impact student academic performance, shape attitudes about school, and affect school dropout rates (Chang & Romero, 2008; U.S. Department of Education, 2009). McGiboney (2012) examined attendance data among Georgia elementary school students, noting a significant relationship between number of days in school (defined as ‘‘seat time’’), success in school, and ultimately, probability of high school graduation. One cause of school absenteeism is influenza. The effects of influenza are widespread. The virus possesses the capabil- ity to infect large number of people rapidly, impacting 10%– 20% of the U.S. population every year (Weycker et al., 2005). Those who become infected develop symptoms that can last several days, leading to bed rest, school/work loss, and increased physician visits. Mortality rates due to influenza infection have been estimated to exceed 36,000 each year, and the annual economic impact of influenza in the United States has been estimated between $11 and $18 billion dollars (Davis, King, Moag, Cummings, & Magder, 2008). Infection rates among children are the highest among any age group during a typical influenza season, averaging 25%–43% (Weycker et al., 2005). Running head: PERCEIVED BENEFITS AND BARRIES ON MMR VACCINE 1 Perceived Benefits and Barriers about the MMR Vaccine among the Parents of a Pediatric Population in South Florida Florida International University PERCEIVED BENEFITS AND BARRIES ON MMR VACCINE 2 Background According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 1 in 4 people in the United States will be hospitalized and one out of every 1,000 people with measles will develop brain swelling that could lead to brain damage. Given the possible severity when obtaining Measles, the CDC recommends to protect children against measles by obtaining a vaccine that provides enduring insurance against all strains of measles (Measles, 2018). The Measles, Mumps, and Rubella vaccine (MMR) is administered in two doses in order to prevent an individual from obtaining one of those diseases. The first dose was given to children when they are about 13 months old, which offers 90 to 95% protection against those diseases. The second dose increases those protection odds to become 99%, which is administered before a child turns five years old. In order for the vaccine to be immune in our system, we need to achieve at least 95% of immunity to those diseases (Gardner, 2010). Side effects of MMR vaccine There is for all intents and purposes no medication without reactions. Gentle symptoms of MMR vaccine include the following: fever, mild rash, and swelling of the glands in the cheeks or neck. Moderate reactions include: febrile seizures, brief joint inflammation, and impermanent thrombocytopenia. Serious side effects of MMR vaccine are amazingly uncommon, but can include serious allergic responses. Other serious side effects are rare to the point that it is difficult to recognize whether they are caused by the vaccine, which includes: deafness, long- term seizures, coma, lowered consciousness, and lasting brain damage (Mahmić-Kaknjo, 2017). Lloyd et al., 2018 focused at establishig whether the school-based interventions for children of ages 9-10 years would help in preventive excessive weight gain after 24 months. The researchers used pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial of the Healthier Lifestyle Programme (HeLP) which is a school-based obesity prevention intervention that was performed in 32 schools found in the southwest England. This method is revealing school as the ideal location for the childhood obesity preventiuon programs due to the near-universal reach f children in the socioeconomic spectrum. It also shows the importance of the change in the diet and physical activity behaviors and their impacts on the weight status (Lloyd, et al., 2018). Were the study sample participants representative? Why or why not? The sample calculation assumed a mean of 35 children age 9-10 years in every school and this implies that a total of 1,120 samples were used. This is a good number that can represents the problems at the 32 schools that were being targeted by the researchers. Compare and contrast the study limitations in this study. The findings of the study shows that the effectiveness of the school-based obesity prevention programmed is inconclusive and contradictory. The interventions used are highly heterogenous in the design and most of the studies used for the research have some methodological weaknesses for example the inadequate statistical power, greater levels of attrition, differential uptake, follow-up, and the short-lived follow-up. · Based on this evidence summary, would you consider this systematic review as support for your selected practice problem? Explain your rationale. Two themes were considered to be important i.e. energy in and decision making and the responsibility. It is clear that school hosts many children and can therefore be used as ideal place to deliver the population-based interventions.
