2. NOTES NOTES Introduction Since June of 1998, I have been in daily contact with women Trying To Conceive. Through observation, feedback and learning about my own fertility issues, I have encouraged women to learn about their unique fertility patterns. Knowledge is Power! Your best defense with TTC (Trying To Conceive), is a good offense and that offense is predicting ovulation. Predicting ovulation is the key to TTC Success. It has been my pleasure to help women conceive naturally through education and natural remedies. I began calling myself Momma Kath during my luteal phase (the luteal phase is the two week period after ovulation) as a positive affirmation. Let me know if I can assist further as I am dedicated to helping women keep their sanity and succeed in the TTC journey+++ Momma Kath Introduction Since June of 1998, I have been in daily contact with women Trying To Conceive. To understand when you ovulate, let’s start with the phases of each cycle: Follicle Phase (Cycle Day 1 – 13) Ovulation (Cycle Day 14) Luteal Phase (Cycle Day 15 – 29) The luteal phase starts the day after ovulation. Knowing how long it lasts is important because this phase repeats itself every cycle. What changes from cycle to cycle is how long it takes you to ovulate! What is Cycle Day One? The first day you see red, not brown spotting. What are hormones? Hormones (from a Greek root “to excite”) deliver a chemical message, which target cells to change. Each phase has it’s unique dominant hormones: Follicle Phase – FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) and Estrogen (lowers basal temp) Ovulation – LH (Luteinizing hormone) Luteal Phase – Progesterone (raises basal temp) What is a follicle? When we are born, our ovaries contain many eggs (approximately 400,000). Follicle cells surround each egg. When chosen the follicle cells multiply and create a shell for the maturing egg. What is the follicle phase? When eggs are chosen and their maturity begins. Follicle Stimulating Hormone (“FSH”) targets approximately a dozen eggs each cycle. As the eggs are maturing they produce estrogen that begins lowering our basal body temperature. Each cycle is different, but only 1-3 eggs out of the 12 chosen are viable (capable of a successful pregnancy). Predicting Ovulation is the Key! 8. HOW CAN I PREDICT OVULATION? Body Basal Temperature (BBT): Low basal temperature (basal = base or morning temp before getting out of bed because activity raises our base temp). Pre-ovulation temps range from 97.2 – 97.6. Egg White Cervical Mucus (EWCM): A few days prior to ovulation we produce this very clear slippery mucus (much like egg whites). This is very fertile mucus and a clear indication that ovulation is about to occur. This mucus protects the sperm from the acidic environment of the vagina. Ovulation Predictor Kit “OPK”: The OPK detects the LH (luteinizing hormone) surge. Ovulation should (no guarantees) occur 24-36 hours AFTER the LH surge. For best results test in late afternoon, limit fluid intake and hold urine for a few hours. Cervix disappears as it opens: The cervix (tunnel between vagina and uterus) rises and opens to allow passage of sperm into the uterus. Sperm is deposited into the vagina. If the cervix is open, sperm is able to swim out of the vagina in search of an egg to fertilize. Lunar Ovulation: In Astrology, lunar or spontaneous ovulation can occur when the Sun and Moon are at the same angle as they were at the time of your birth. 9. Basal Thermometer: A basal thermometer is more sensitive as we are looking for very small changes each morning. A regular fever thermometer was designed to read every 2/10s (97.2, 97.4) change vs. every 1/10 (97.2, 97.3) change in your Basal Body Temperature "BBT" or (base) lowest temperature of the day. Your BBT is taken first thing in the morning before getting out of bed after a minimum of three consecutive hours of sleep. Your temperature should be taken at the same time each morning. Temperature ranges vary tremendously but are typically between 96.5 - 97.5 before ovulation and 97.5 - 98.6 after ovulation. A thermal shift (a rise in temp of more than 2/10s) indicates ovulation has occurred Ovulation Predictor Kits HOW THE TEST WORKS The Ovulation Predictor is a test for detecting an increase of luteinizing hormone (LH) in your urine. Normally, about 1 or 2 days before the middle of each menstrual cycle, the level of this hormone will increase suddenly (this is called the LH surge). Usually, an egg is released from the ovary 24 to 36 hours after the LH surge (this process is known as ovulation). The released egg can only be fertilized during the next 24 hours or so. Your most fertile time only lasts for a short period each month. In order to maximize the chance of becoming pregnant, it is recommended that intercourse take place within 2 days after you detect your LH surge. HOW TO PERFORM THE TEST Test in the late afternoon. After lunch, try not to drink excess fluids to isnure a potent specimen. Let some urine pass before you begin collecting the sample so the urine you collect is from your bladder. Collect urine using a clean, dry container. If the test will be carried out after more than 1 hour from the time of urine collection, the urine should be refrigerated. If refrigerated, urine should be allowed to warm to room temperature before testing. When you are ready to begin the test, open the foil pouch, Read results between 3‑5 minutes. 12. To test or not to test, and when… Many of us struggle with home pregnancy testing. For some, early home pregnancy testing allows the opportunity to have a pregnancy monitored as early as possible. If there are no high-risk circumstances, it is probably best to wait 12-14dpo (days past ovulation). Pregnancy Tests detect Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG). hCG is a hormone which is secreted by the developing placenta. The appearance and increased levels of hCG provide an excellent indicator of pregnancy. The hCG hormone doubles approximately every 2.2 days during the first trimester. Detectable levels start at 5 mlU/mL during the first week of gestation and rise to 100,000 mlU/mL at 2 to 3 months. Miscarriage may be associated with a slow rise in hCG levels. During the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, hCG levels decline 10% to 15% from peak concentrations. Why is there pain at Ovulation? The Luteinizing Hormone causes swelling. When the egg is forced through the wall of the ovary, the mature egg falls out into the abdominal cavity along with fluid from the follicle. The egg is picked up by the fallopian tube but the fluid drips into the abdominal cavity causing pain and inflammation. Sharp pain may be an indication of an ovarian cyst. Please report that to your doctor! What is the Luteal Phase? The Luteal Phase (“LP” or days past ovulation “dpo”) is a time of fertilization, conception and implantation. This two-week wait (2ww) features Progesterone as the dominant hormone and Progesterone raises our Basal Body Temperature. What is a corpus luteum? What was known as a follicle (while the egg was maturing) is now known as the Corpus Luteum or corpse of the follicle. Where does progesterone come from? The cells that once surrounded that maturing egg remain in the follicle, now known as the corpus luteum, and produce the hormone progesterone. 23. HERBS FOR HER is a proprietary blend of RED RASPBERRY and VITEX. Red Raspberry can be started anytime in cycle and can be taken during pregnancy until a month prior to labor/delivery. Red Raspberry strengthens the uterine lining which in turn lengthens LP (LP = Luteal Phase) LP = DPO or days past ovulation and eases painful menses and nausea. VITEX a/k/a Chasteberry helps relieve PMS because of its effects on female sex hormones. It helps restore hormone balance by increasing production of luteinzing hormone ("LH" which is detected by OPK) and inhibiting the release of FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone). This leads to a shift in the estrogen-progesterone ratio, resulting in less estrogen to cause or aggravate PMS. Vitex proved clearly superior to B6. WARNING: PMS with depression may be caused by excess progesterone, and Vitex is said to raise progesterone levels. Women who have PMS with significant depression should probably steer clear of chasteberry. Vitex should NOT be taken at the same time as Clomid, they cancel each other out. You may safely begin taking Vitex five days after your last Clomid pill. Essential Fatty Acids (Vitamin F) Linoleic and Linolenic Acids: The fatty acids that cannot be made by the body but are necessary for health and the rebuilding and producing of new cells are called “essential” fatty acids (EFAs). Flax Seed Oil (“FSO) and Evening Primrose Oil (“EPO”) are EFAs. Best sources of Vitamin F: Soybeans, pumpkin seeds and walnuts. EVENING PRIMROSE Oil ("EPO") 1,000 IU per day should be taken only from Cycle Day 1 to Ovulation. Do not take EPO after ovulation because EPO causes uterine contractions, which may interfere with implantation. EPO is a good source of Essential Fatty Acids "EFA". All living cells need fatty acids for rebuilding and producing new cells. The body uses EFAs to produce substances, which send messages that trigger hormone production necessary for a successful cycle! FLAX SEED OIL ("FSO") 2,000 mg per day from Ovulation to AF. Flax Seeds are rich in omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids "EFA" magnesium, potassium and fiber. When you stop taking EPO (above) switching to FSO will continue a steady flow of essential fatty acids to be present throughout cycle. HERBS FOR HER is a proprietary blend of RED RASPBERRY and VITEX. Therefore, do not expect to get approval or information from your medical doctor regarding herbs. You should, however, let your medical professional know when you are taking anything on a regular basis as it could interfere with your medical condition. Herbs strive to create a long lasting hormone balance; chemicals artificially stimulate only one hormone. Therefore using both herbs and chemicals (clomid, birth control pills and prometrium) at the same time may erase the effect of the chemical. Herbs are very powerful and any new herbal regime should be started slowly. Keep a record of your herbal intake and note any changes which occur, however slight. If you experience bleeding or discomfort stop taking them immediately. Wait a few days then resume. Hopefully the bleeding or discomfort will not re-occur. If it does, consider a different herb or approach to your situation. Momma Kath’s herbal regimes are packaged in 30, 60 and 90 days increments and include explicit instructions plus free tests! Alfalfa: Alkalizes and detoxifies the body (making the body more sperm and estrogen friendly, thus improving cervical mucus!). Acts as a diuretic, eases inflammation, lowers cholesterol, balances hormones and promotes pituitary gland function. Alfalfa contains Alpha-carotene, B-complex vitamins, calcium, chlorophyll, copper, essential amino acids, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, protein, sodium, sulfur, zinc, vitamins A, C, D, E, and K. Because of its chlorophyll content Alfalfa purifies the blood. BEWARE: There is some evidence that Alfalfa may trigger lupus in sensitive individuals. Baby Aspirin a/k/a Children’s Dose of Aspirin (81mg): Take only one (1) per day! This low dose of aspirin is known to suppress natural killer cells in the uterus, so it is used for those with immune problems. Because Aspirin thins your blood, it also increases blood flow to the ovaries (improving follicle development) and increases blood flow to the uterus (improving the quality of the uterine lining). This increases the odds that implantation will be successful. Also, during pregnancy, it will help prevent miscarriage or fetal demise in those prone to blood clots. Having blood clots form in the placenta and/or umbilical cord is the cause of many of these PG losses. Warning: Acetaminophen a/k/a Tylenol is not aspirin and will not produce the same results as aspirin.
