 DIANNE’S KIDS MEDIA CONNECTION
 CHILDREN’S BOOKS
 Party Animals
Written and Illustrated by Katie Davis
 Picture Book Ages -3-8
 ISBN: 0-15-216675-0
Everyone in the barnyard is invited to the big party! Everyone but the little blue ant. No wonder he’s blue – he
didn’t receive his invitation… In this clever counting book, all the farm animals (two purple frogs, three yellow
pigs, four pink mice, five turquoise cows, six red ponies, seven orange ducks, eight green goats, nine white birds,
ten magenta hens, eleven chartreuse chicks and twelve black sheep) prepare for the big soiree’. Throughout the
book, Ant, slightly hidden, asks to help and makes funny commentary. The end of the book brings everyone
together in a delightful surprise. In addition to learning numbers and unusual colors, children will delight in the
animals’ antics. Katie Davis’ quirky and vibrant illustrations illuminate this humorous tale of fun and friendship. A
great birthday or holiday gift for your favorite barnyard pal.

Note from Dianne: Katie Davis’ website is full of fun for grown-ups and children alike. Full of splashy and fun
flash animation as well as useful activities and classroom guides, the website is a must-visit. http://

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. I wanted to include the word "diabolical" in this presentation as a tongue-in-cheek way to point \nout that there is nothing wrong in wanting to promote your books, or build a platform, or heavens \nto mergatroid, a BRAND. \n\n-frowned upon to a degree\n-there are ways not to do it, and ways to do it\n-everyone isn't going to be a front list author and with 10k books published every year...\nbut you do need to be smart about it\n\nI'll go over various ways to build and broaden your platform, and will share a few ways to do that specifically, but this is an overall idea generator for you, just to expose you to different avenues to explore as you begin your...um...diabolicalness.\n\n
  2. Feel free to tweet this during my sesh. - \nthat right there is brand-building \nFirst, who am I?\n\n
  3. I used to be very inward looking. \nHow could I promote MYSELF. \nGot bored...and wanted to look more outward. Think more globally. I got a lot more fulfillment out of helping other people. \nI was doing that for awhile at conferences and privately consulting folks, and then a few more efforts added to the tipping point ...Without realizing it, I have been building what is now called a platform, or god forbid, a brand. Can of coke...\nThe effect was almost instant - two years instant.\n\nAll the things I've done over the years stem from my passion for children's books, and literacy, \nmake no mistake - crass reality is that we all need to make an income, and if I wanted to do this full time, promotion had to come into it. \nThese are some of the things I did to build a platform - there is absolutely no reason you can't do them too.\n

  13. The first thing you MUST have is a web presence in the form of a web site, blog site or at least a page - you MUST have a jumping off place. Your site or blog is your jumping off point.\n\n\n\n
  14. Blogsite: my favorite - party example\nPage: minimum\n\n
  15. Hostgator as your server.\nI created this as a free webinar, and if you learn anything by watching it, and you do decide to use hostgator, I would appreciate it if you used this link. It's an affiliate link, so every time you go through this link, it costs you the exact same, but I make a couple of dollars because I referred you.\nYou can buy your domain name there, and they will host it for you. They're very stable, and though I was with godaddy for a long time, I switched because godaddy was hacked and sent my site down right int he middle of a big launch. All the web experts I know love hostgator, and now I do too.\n\n\n
  16. Blog: good to have a focus - in wordpress, categories help with that \n\n
  17. Remember- all a platform is is a place from which you spread your message, whatever that message is and the people to whom you speak is your community. It's communicating - that's all!\n\nOne of the guywires to building your network/community/platform is a newsletter. My newsletter and then my ebook, How to Promote Your Children's Book: Tips, Tricks, and Secrets to Create a Bestseller definitely grew the reach of my platform. But it didn't start that way!\n
  18. I hope you will learn from what I've done because it will save you time AND help the people who sign up to read what you have to say.\n\n\n\n
  19. My newsletter was getting no discernable results bc all I was doing was sending out news about ME - Jerry - he said - follow TV gig w/ newsletter and include the video. I was promoting OTHER people. I started doing it regularly.\n\nI've now changed the way I do things with my newsletter and I hope you will learn from what I've done because it will save you time AND help the people who sign up to read what you have to say.\n\nI use aWeber - it allows me to create a newsletter like the one I just showed you and set it to send to a subscriber a certain number of days after he or she subscribes. I can set up another to follow THAT a certain number of days after. I can set up any number, and I set them up so they're evergreen. That way, if you sign up say, January 10th, you'll get my first newsletter on January 17th and so on. Say you tell your friend how fab Katie Davis's newsletter is. SHE signs up on February 1...she'll get the same first one you got 7 days later, and so on. \n\nYou can also create one time notices, called bulletins. They do not repeat and aren't evergreen - so I might send out a reminder that my webinar with Emma Dryden is open for sign ups. Or a special discount in my store is happening or a gift only for subscribers - stuff like that.\n\n
  20. I wanted to show you that there are different ways to send your newsletter...Dianne uses a free service called Dada Mail. \n\nNewsletters Keep you in touch with fans, allowing a consistent presence\n-Receive feedback - \n-Get speaking engagements because it reminds people you're available. \n- boosts book sales, especially when a new book releases.\n
  21. \n\n
  22. Get involved in whatever social media you're comfortable with.\nMy faves are youtube (second biggest search engine - owned by google, helps get your name out there), Pinterest, the fastest growing social site out there in history - my Pinterest webinar was attended by hundreds of people - there is huge interest! Google+ bc again, google favors it for searches, twitter connects you to people you never knew you could connect to (anyone!) LinkedIn is valuable bc connecting to peeps through your tweets and other things, and last, jacketflap (unproven to me).\n
  23. The least sport-interested person here, probably, goes for a basketball reference! But when players go across the court aggressibly...\nso how can you get covered in the press? Like those athletes, go for the win! Don't be afraid to approach the media...you never know where it will lead. \n
  24. Local news is more likely at first...I approached the ABC affiliate in CT, appealing to their community support angle. I wrote a proposal that I go on once a month, recommending great books for kids, showing that they support literacy. I've been going on for years now...\nCall your local cable station, local affiliates. \n
  25. Think of a hook. A regular series, and pitch it to them. \n
  26. Go even tighter into your community - if there is a Patch in your town, look it up and offer content - they seem to need it a lot!\n

  31. You ARE an expert - you have to know what that is. It gives you an outlet for your passion. It can support a cause; it can earn income for you. And it builds your platform.\n\nSo...what are you passionate about? Once you figure that out, there are many ways to share that passion, which will do many things for you, and your platform...\n
  32. You can host webinars.\n\nI suggest you watch many before hosting one. Most I find very boring...all text or some stock images...why be there? \n\nFOR HIGHLIGHTS: If you don't know what a webinar is, it's basically a slideshow where, instead of going to a conference, you go to a web room or screen share forum and watch the webinar. In fact, I'll be doing this presentation in a webinar on Thursday. It's online, usually attendees are muted. Often, there are Q&As after. \n\nFOR BOTH: I've started an "Ask the Expert" series, and have many of the biggest names in our business coming. I'm also doing free webinars like this one. Why? For a few reasons: they're fun to do, they add to my mailing list, they spread my message and therefore strengthens my platform. They also create an income stream, \n
  33. both from the ticket sales as well as the digital product after...\n\n
  34. I can also offer these as prizes in followup webinars, or elsewhere, and can give my subscribers special discounts not available anywhere else.\n
  35. \nand of course...\n
  36. \n\n
  37. There are many ways to host a webinar - remember, it's just an online presentation. A seminar on the web.\n

  41. I could've put this slide anywhere... what is your mission and what empassions you? I love teaching and supporting people in their efforts to market themselves as writers, with an emphasis on children's writers. But I also need to make an income. So these platform builders are what I love to do, but also have created an income stream. And keep copies of nice feedback!\n

  45. Don't forget, we're still under Diabolical Way #4, Expertise. I love, love, love talking to...well, just talking! I wanted to create a show where listeners felt like a fly on the wall to conversations between kidlit professionals. It's grown from that to news as well... I've reported on important issues in our business:\n\nCensorship\nN-word - Huck Finn\nBruce Coville's escape from Egypt\nMy 100th episode featured the first three National Ambassadors of Literature for Young People.\n\nAgain, this expanded my platform because then I was approached by\n
  46. Jon Bard of the Children's Book Insider - he has 44,000 people on his mailing list and over 4,000 people as a part of his membership club ($4.49/month). Now I'm exposed to all his people, he's offering great content - and didn't have audio as part of his menu prior to my involvement, and this will now expand my platform to include many of his peeps. Go to katieloves.me/bookworms to join.\n

In having done so, she has tripled her school visits\n
  50. I just interviewed Debbie on Brain Burps About Books because of her book, I'm Bored. She created and founded one of the earliest sites for writers, Inkspot, she ended up selling the site, and in creating it became widely known.\n

He started a Tweetchat that has become one of the biggest in the business of children's publishing. When Greg self publishes a book of poetry - or submits to a publisher, he already has a community to share the news with, and potentially to whom he can sell his book.\n
  53. This is closely connected to reciprocity...\n
