3. Context for space for cycling
• London Cycling Campaign’s space for
cycling slogan has resonated locally
• An opportunity to strengthen the
‘cycling vote’ and make links between
local and national campaigning
• Political momentum - Times campaign, Love London Go Dutch, Get
Britain Cycling, forthcoming Cycling Delivery Plan. (But it won’t last…)
• Local momentum - enthusiasm from cities, campaign groups growing
in strength
• Government committed to ‘fine words’ but not targets, design
standards or funding

is happening in your area submit
If you want to see space for cycling, so that anyone can cycle anywhere,
join the nation-wide space for cycling campaign, and write to your local
councillors, asking them to pledge to make space for cycling.
10. Challenge your councillors to make
space for cycling in your area
Dear Cllr Doe,
Please make space for cycling on our streets
I am writing as your constituent and someone who would like to cycle more.
Nationally 62% of people agree with the statement that ‘the idea of cycling on busy roads frightens me’.
If we want more people to cycle, we must make conditions on our streets feel safer.
I want to see Graniteshire County Council making protected space on our main roads, removing through
traffic from residential streets, lowering speeds limits and making our town centres cycle friendly.
