1. PERIOD OF NATIONAL MOURNING
a photo-essay on the 1st day of Lying-in-State of Mr Lee Kuan Yew in Parliament House
2. Toning down the saturation of the photographs to -80%, it aptly describes the
sombre mood that has engulfed the population. An immeasurable loss was
heartfelt in all citizens for a stoic (some would say harsh) man with a lifetime
passion of building Singapore to what it is today. While observing the eight-hour-
long snaky queues along (and around) the Singapore river from Clarke Quay to the
Parliament house, I felt an innate need to do a tribute to Mr Lee Kuan Yew,
however inept it may be. It is highly admirable that 400,000 Singaporeans, young
or old, working or retired, abled or disadvantaged, stood under the hot sun for a
large part of the day in order to be able to take a minute or two to pay respects to
our late founding father. More heartening were the times where I spotted old
reunions, especially the elderly meeting their primary school friends again amidst
the queue for the first time since their separation.
In time to come, I hope that this photo-essay will let the future generations, those
that were born after his demise, to remember Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s contributions to
Singapore, and Singaporeans’ appreciation to his work.
