CHALLENGE
Extending your knowledge of the
colour wheel
Use the colour wheel
to help you test out
colour combinations.
Paint your insects in
bright neon’s,
harmonius colours or
warm/cool colours
2. Acrylic is a popular art medium because of
its versatility. For both beginners and
accomplished artists alike, acrylic is great for
exploring new techniques and expanding
creativity. Acrylic paint is synthetic (humanmade) and can be applied thickly with rich
textures, similar to oil paint, or it can be
applied in thin washes or glazes, like water
colour. It can even be used to paint precision
and minute detail.
Experiment with mixing colours using the
Different colour combinations discussed
later.

5. Think about your use of colour.
Colors affect us in numerous ways, both
mentally and physically. A strong red color has
been shown to raise the blood pressure, while
a blue color has a calming effect.
Being able to use colors consciously and
harmoniously can help you create spectacular
results.

6. Warm and cool colors
The color circle can be divided
into warm and cool colors.
Warm colors are vivid and
energetic, and tend to advance
in space.
Cool colors give an impression
of calm, and create a soothing
impression.
White, black and gray are
considered to be neutral.

Complementary colour
scheme
Colours that are opposite
each other on the colour
wheel are considered to be
complementary colours
The high contrast of
complementary colours
creates a vibrant look
especially
when used at full saturation.

Analogous colour scheme
Analogous colour schemes
use colours that are next to
each other on the colour
wheel. They usually match
well and create serene and
comfortable designs.
Analogous colour schemes
are often found in nature and
are harmonious and pleasing
to the eye.
Make sure you have enough
contrast when choosing an
analogous colour scheme.

Triadic colour scheme
A triadic colour scheme
uses colours that are
evenly spaced around
the color wheel.
Triadic colour schemes
tend to be quite vibrant,
even if you use pale or
unsaturated versions of
your hues.
9. Success Criteria
Use your collage squares to practice
Painting with acrylics.
Use each of the four colour schemes
Discussed to paint your test boxes.
