How Do We Provide Learning
Flexibility That Learners Want?
Blending Various
Learning Strategies
and Approaches for
Flexibility with
blended learning.

Blended Learning
 origin of the term in the USA…
 No clear single definition available
 … and no clear common understanding
either?
 difficult to translate in different languages
 Alternative names:
◦ mixed learning
◦ hybrid learning
◦ blended e-learning
◦ ”melted learning” (in Finnish)
3Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT
What is Blended Learning?
Blended Learning is combining multiple learning
components and learning events to create a
meaningful learning.
Blended learning is a term increasingly
used to describe the way e-learning is being
combined with traditional classroom methods
and independent study to create a new,
hybrid teaching methodology.

Why Blended Learning?
Increased flexibility in
learning
With the increasing use of a variety of
approaches for learning in the
information age, learners' preferences
are changing from wanting to be taught
mostly in lectures or direct training
sessions to wanting increased flexibility.
6Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT
7 Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT
A learning model in three parts
 In-person classroom activities
facilitated by a trained educator.
 Online learning materials, often
including pre-recorded lectures given
by that same instructor.
 Structured independent study time
guided by the material in the lectures
and skills developed during the
classroom experience.
8Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT
9Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT
Blended learning redefining
teaching roles
 Development of online and offline
course content.
 Facilitation of communication with
and among students, including
the pedagogy of communicating
content online without the
contextual clues students would
get in person.
10Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT
Blended learning redefining
teaching roles
 Guiding the learning experience
of individual students, and
customizing material wherever
possible to strengthen the
learning experience.
 Assessment and grading, not
unlike the expectations for
teachers within the traditional
framework.
11Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT
Components of Blended
Learning
1. Synchronous Physical/Face-to-Face
Components (not limited to)
 Face-to-face Tutoring

2. Synchronous Electronic
Components (not limited to)
 Internet conferencing
 Audio Conferencing (i.e., phone
conferencing)
 Live Video via satellite or
Videoconferencing
 Virtual Online Classroom
 Instant Messaging
13Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT
3. Asynchronous Components (not
limited to)
 On-line self-paced Learning Content (Web pages)
 E-mail, Discussion Forums
 EPSS (Electronic Support Systems) & Job Aids
 Web/Computer-Based instruction
 Books
 Articles
 CD-ROM

Asynchronous Interactions
= Strong Online Learning
Environment
15Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT
How to work for blended learning?
 Your first class should always be Face-to-Face
(or at least Real-Time) if possible.
 Assessments should be real-time and the
choice of F2F or online should be made
available.
 There must be multiple times throughout the
class that are synchronously conducted.
 Differentiate your Content Delivery and
Discussion Methods.
 Keep the Class Size Limited.
16Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT
Blended learning – advantages
 It gives 24/7 access to all learning content –
creating massive flexibility in scheduling the
course.
 One can gauge progress against the learning
outcomes and receive comments.
 Through it, supportive learning networks are
created that build upon face-to-face learning
with asynchronous collaborative learning.
 It saves time and paper, and provides
feedback quickly to each learner.
17Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT
disadvantages of blended learning
 the need for access to electronic devices
and internet. Also, the use of technology
can pose a barrier.

A learning model in three parts  In-person classroom activities facilitated by a trained educator.  Online learning materials, often including pre-recorded lectures given by that same instructor.  Structured independent study time guided by the material in the lectures and skills developed during the classroom experience. 8Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT
  • 10. Blended learning redefining teaching roles  Development of online and offline course content.  Facilitation of communication with and among students, including the pedagogy of communicating content online without the contextual clues students would get in person. 10Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT
  • 11. Blended learning redefining teaching roles  Guiding the learning experience of individual students, and customizing material wherever possible to strengthen the learning experience.  Assessment and grading, not unlike the expectations for teachers within the traditional framework. 11Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT

  • 16. How to work for blended learning?  Your first class should always be Face-to-Face (or at least Real-Time) if possible.  Assessments should be real-time and the choice of F2F or online should be made available.  There must be multiple times throughout the class that are synchronously conducted.  Differentiate your Content Delivery and Discussion Methods.  Keep the Class Size Limited. 16Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT
  • 17. Blended learning – advantages  It gives 24/7 access to all learning content – creating massive flexibility in scheduling the course.  One can gauge progress against the learning outcomes and receive comments.  Through it, supportive learning networks are created that build upon face-to-face learning with asynchronous collaborative learning.  It saves time and paper, and provides feedback quickly to each learner. 17Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT
  • 18. disadvantages of blended learning  the need for access to electronic devices and internet. Also, the use of technology can pose a barrier. 18Dr.kirti matliwala, VNSGU, SURAT
