There is a shortage of doctors in Canada reaching crisis levels due to doctors emigrating to the US. One in nine doctors who graduate from Canadian medical schools now practice in the US. Nineteen doctors emigrate from Canada to the US each year, while only one doctor migrates in the opposite direction. Fifty to seventy-five percent of foreign-trained medical candidates do not return to Canada after completing their training. Solutions proposed include increasing restrictions on doctor migration, providing additional benefits to retain doctors in Canada, implementing special contracts between doctors and hospitals, and liberalizing rules around private hospitals.
