TFTN fulfills the promise of the NSDI. USDOT responsible for the Transportation Theme, but has never had the resources or mission to complete it. Partnering with NSGIC brings states and localities into the equation, and NSGIC can promote TFTN to Congress Reaching out to stakeholders to ensure this is more than just a federal effort. Must include all modes and their interconnections. Stakeholders will decide what else.
Funding is the big problem. No existing source within USDOT. With NSGIC’s help, maybe secure line item funding from Congress? Can State gov be source for the data? Maybe.
Private sector provides tremendous added value. Both sides can benefit. If some version of a complete, routable, and addressable private sector cannot be put in the public domain, then at least we can all share a common geometry. Rep from Open Street Map will sit on steering committee.
Attributes will vary with the mission. At the USDOT level, inventory information (sign route, street name, etc) is a given. HPMS attributes also needed. Maybe LRS is the answer? Basically, I want to hear from the stakeholders on this.
I want to hear from the audience and other panelists regarding the last 3 questions.
