MRT’s Technology Line groups together activities that cover a large range on the Technology Readiness Level (TRL)
scale, going up to industrial transfer. Currently, the Technology Line is comprised of the Advanced Instrumentation
for Ion Nano-Analytics (AINA) group.
The AINA group focuses on the development of scientific instruments based on charged particle beams, covering
fundamental investigations, instrument development and applications. Its targeted fields of application are nano-
imaging and nano-analysis.
The team comprises specialists in nano-analytics, charged particle optics, ion-matter interactions and engineering
(mechanical, electronic, and software), providing the AINA group with the complete spectrum of know-how required to
convert innovative ideas and concepts into prototype instruments.
Our different research projects and technologies are performed in cooperation with leading international instrument
manufacturers and with research groups specialized in the relevant fields.

The unit’s team of engineers, researchers and technologists combine their expertise to translate the enabling
capabilities of nanotechnology/nanomaterials into application-driven solutions. Based on the thorough understanding
of the properties of novel functional materials, the unit conducts research, development and innovation in the areas of:
uu The activities focus on the elaboration and understanding of ferroic materials for transducers which is a device
that convert one form of energy to another form of energy
uu Transparent semiconductors and optically tuneable nanocomposites addressing the dynamic growth of
invisible electronics or colour-based applications in the glass, display, sensor and consumer industries
uu Nano-enabled advanced technologies for the medical and cosmetics industries including diagnostics, prosthetic
devices and drug delivery systems
COMPOSITE MATERIALS
The mission of the unit is to study the behaviour of composite materials and to develop new environmentally friendly
functional composites using a combined experimental (synthesis, processing and testing) and numerical (modelling)
approach, in close collaboration with the composites industry and its suppliers.
The team focuses on two main areas:
uu The design and durability of high performance and multi-functional polymer-based-composites
uu Interface engineering: performance and durability are mainly driven by the quality of the interface between
fillers/fibres and the polymer matrix.
The unit’s activities include research and development concerning:
uu The design of multifunctional composites
uu Bio-based composites
uu Durability of composites
uu Adhesion and compatibilization of fibres/matrix
uu Complex architectures at the interface.

From one-time analysis or testing needs to research contracts, we support RDI activities in the following areas:

department cultivates close relationships and joint projects
with both academic and industrial partners, and contributes
to Luxembourg’s and Europe’s innovation agenda in materials
research.

The department is characterised by a young, engaged and
international staff, who are open to new collective challenges

institutions, RTOs and industry. Chemists, physicists,
materials and engineering scientists, and increasingly
scientists with a background in life science, all shape the
work at MRT. They work together in an interdisciplinary
manner, both within the LIST departments and with actors
from the Luxembourg public or industrial sectors.

  • 1. LIST’s Materials Research and Technology (MRT) department translates cutting- edge materials research into applicable technology. MRT research activities focus on two Key Enabling Technologies (KETs): Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology. Its Central Materials Laboratory and Platform for Advanced Characterization offer high-level expertise and equipment to industry. More information at LIST.lu/mrt Materials Research and Technology ( MRT ) RDI Department Our RDI Departments and their competence domains © LIST - April 2015 - printed on FSC certified paper TECHNOLOGY LINE DEPARTMENT MANAGEMENT Prof. Dr Jens KREISEL Director Dr Damien Lenoble Deputy Director MRT’s Technology Line groups together activities that cover a large range on the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale, going up to industrial transfer. Currently, the Technology Line is comprised of the Advanced Instrumentation for Ion Nano-Analytics (AINA) group. The AINA group focuses on the development of scientific instruments based on charged particle beams, covering fundamental investigations, instrument development and applications. Its targeted fields of application are nano- imaging and nano-analysis. The team comprises specialists in nano-analytics, charged particle optics, ion-matter interactions and engineering (mechanical, electronic, and software), providing the AINA group with the complete spectrum of know-how required to convert innovative ideas and concepts into prototype instruments. NANOMATERIALS AND NANOTECHNOLOGY The unit’s team of engineers, researchers and technologists combine their expertise to translate the enabling capabilities of nanotechnology/nanomaterials into application-driven solutions. Based on the thorough understanding of the properties of novel functional materials, the unit conducts research, development and innovation in the areas of: uu The activities focus on the elaboration and understanding of ferroic materials for transducers which is a device that convert one form of energy to another form of energy uu Transparent semiconductors and optically tuneable nanocomposites addressing the dynamic growth of invisible electronics or colour-based applications in the glass, display, sensor and consumer industries uu Nano-enabled advanced technologies for the medical and cosmetics industries including diagnostics, prosthetic devices and drug delivery systems COMPOSITE MATERIALS The mission of the unit is to study the behaviour of composite materials and to develop new environmentally friendly functional composites using a combined experimental (synthesis, processing and testing) and numerical (modelling) approach, in close collaboration with the composites industry and its suppliers. The team focuses on two main areas: uu The design and durability of high performance and multi-functional polymer-based-composites uu Interface engineering: performance and durability are mainly driven by the quality of the interface between fillers/fibres and the polymer matrix. The unit’s activities include research and development concerning: uu The design of multifunctional composites uu Bio-based composites uu Durability of composites uu Adhesion and compatibilization of fibres/matrix uu Complex architectures at the interface. The Central Materials Laboratory develops cutting-edge expertise enabling the department’s objectives by focusing on: uu Thin film coating and engineering uu Polymer processing uu Synthesis of nano-structures, nano-particles and organic chemistry uu Prototyping, nanofabrication and functional measurements. It benefits from the department’s expertise and equipment and is also open to collaborations with external partners. CROSS-CUTTING SUPPORT & TAILORED SERVICES MRT offers a wide variety of expertise and equipment through its Central Materials Laboratory and its platforms for testing and advanced characterisation of materials. From one-time analysis or testing needs to research contracts, we support RDI activities in the following areas: uu Synthesis of nano-structures, nano-particles and organic chemistry uu Prototyping/nanofabrication uu Electrical, dielectric and photoelectric characterisation uu Thin film processing, engineering and analysis uu Polymer processing and composite manufacturing uu Thermo-physical analysis: phase transitions, thermal diffusivity and conductivity, analysis of characteristic decomposition patterns, mechanical stiffness and damping, dilatometry uu Physical-chemical analysis: structure analysis, detection of trace elements, quantification of dopants, molecular analysis, elemental identification, quantification and distribution uu Surface analysis: morphology, topography, imaging, failure analysis, corrosion, contamination, depth profiling, surface chemistry uu Mechanical testing: impact, static and fatigue tests under severe temperature conditions, standard and customised testing uu Artificial accelerated aging: temperature, humidity and artificial light control, standard tests and tests combined with electrical and/or mechanical endurance uu Fire behaviour: smoke density and toxicity, ignition time, heat release. Research units CENTRAL MATERIALS LABORATORYThe Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology’s (LIST) Materials Research and Technology (MRT) department, made up of around 150 collaborators, translates cutting edge materials research into applicable technology. For this, the department cultivates close relationships and joint projects with both academic and industrial partners, and contributes to Luxembourg’s and Europe’s innovation agenda in materials research. Our research and technology activities target two main areas: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, and composite materials. NANOMATERIALS AND NANOTECHNOLOGY The unit’s team of engineers, researchers and technologists combine their expertise to translate the enabling capabilities of nanotechnology/nanomaterials into application-driven solutions. The AINA group focuses on the development of scientific instruments based on charged particle beams, covering fundamental investigations, instrument development and applications. Its targeted fields of application are nano- imaging and nano-analysis. The team comprises specialists in nano-analytics, charged particle optics, ion-matter interactions and engineering (mechanical, electronic, and software), providing the AINA group with the complete spectrum of know-how required to convert innovative ideas and concepts into prototype instruments.
