>True Revival is Leadership Embracing
>
>1. Living principle: visionary persons are needed to lead the
>church into
>revival and the fullness of its call.
>a. The church goes nowhere without faithful, persevering,
>visionary leadership.
>Tanner: 'The primary factor then in the fostering of revival is the
>human agent
>or agents." Lovelace: "Redemption comes under the direction of
>leaders whom God
>raises up in his sovereign mercy in response to the deep longing and
>intercession of the laity generated under the pressure of defeat or
>suffering"
>(Dynamics of Spiritual Life, 65).
>
>b. The early church had visionary leaders: the apostles, and
>others (Phillip,
>etc.)
>
>c. The established leadership generally rejects visionary
>leaders as their
>ministries begin, but the fruit is impossible to ignore.
>*What do you do with the authority structure when they don flow
>with the
>Spirit? Power is ability, authority is licensing. Pharisees asked
>Jesus, n
>which authority do you do these things??Jesus was using power,
>having authority
>from God.
>
>d. Visionary leaders are characterized by two basic things:
> 1) a clear call from God (they often began their ministries
>on the basis of
>powerful prophetic words, visions or dreams); and,
> 2) a clear vision from God (they demonstrated their
>visionary leadership as
>they entered into and continued in the development of their
>ministries).
>*Vision is not static, but has to be kept fresh by the Lord.
>
>e. Some other characteristics of visionary leaders: hard work,
>positive
>attitude, wisdom and power (authority), perseverance, courage
>through faith,
>communicators.
>
>*creativity; recover forgotten truths; boldness to open new ground
>in the face
>of opposition. They lead the church into mission in a way it never
>believed
>possible.
>
>*They have a clear idea of what the goal is. They are like Moses or
>Joshua,
>leading the people into the Promised Land, not just having them do
>circles in
>the desert.
>
>*When revival hits, forget about vacation! Anacondia works harder
>than anyone
>Deiros knows. Long hours praying for people ?keeps on giving and
>giving and
>giving.
>
>*Perseverance ?probably any of us could be revival leaders if we
>had
>perseverance and didn give up. Revival leaders are persistent day
>in and out
>until they see the glory of the Lord come.
>*Courage through faith ?not afraid to believe God and what he says
>in His Word.
>Theyl step out of the boat to walk on water at His bidding.
>*Deiros says that leaders of revival may not have long prayer times
>regularly.
>For them it more a matter of quality than quantity (which is the
>issue for
>intercessors). They have a quality of intimacy with the Lord, but
>their prayer
>times are for themselves than intercession for others. Others are
>called to
>intercession.
>
>2. Historical illustration: Richard Baxter (1615-1691): 'if
>your hearts be not
>set on the end of your labours, and you do not long to see the
>conversion and
>edification of your hearers, and do not study and preach in hope,
>you are not
>likely to see much fruit of it. It is an ill sign of a false,
>self-seeking
>heart, that can be content to be still doing, and see no fruit of
>their labour."
>
>3. Practical application:
>a. The only way for a church to function effectively, and the
>most important
>element for fulfilling its mission, is to follow visionary or
>apostolic
>leadership.
>
>b. Leaders are the principal change agents in the church.
>
>c. Don't seek the vision, rather seek the kingdom of God, and
>the vision will
>come.
>
>*One danger for apostles, is like the electrician who gets too
>comfortable
>because he knows what to touch and what not to. Some get casual with
>the power
>and then get electrocuted. Don ever get comfortable ?always
>cultivate
>gratefulness, always seek for more ?new ground, etc. with the Lord.
>Apostles
>need to keep fresh, not become ishops?and get things routenized
>and just
>follow the routines.
>

>
>Physical and Emotional Manifestations in Revival
>
>1. Deep conviction of sin.
>a. This state is usually expressed through crying, fear,
>trembling, etc. Some
>historical cases will serve as examples to illustrate these
>manifestations.
>
>b. A report on the Irish Revival (1859), reads: "When the
>conviction as to its mental
>process reaches its crisis, the person, through weakness, is unable
>to sit or stand, and either
>kneels or lies down. A great number of convicted persons in this
>town and neighbourhood, and
>now I believe in all directions in
>the north where the Revival prevails, are 'smitten down' as suddenly
>and they fall as nerveless
>and paralyzed and powerless, as if killed instantly by a shotgun.
>
>They fall with a deep groan, some with a wild cry of horror-the
>greater number with the
>intensely earnest plea, 'Lord Jesus, have mercy on my soul!' The
>whole frame trembles like an
>aspen leaf, an intolerable weight is felt upon the chest,
>a choking sensation is experienced and relief from this found only
>in the loud, urgent prayer
>for deliverance.
>
>Usually the bodily distress and mental anguish continue till some
>degree of confidence in Christ
>is found. Then the look, the tone, the gestures, instantly change.
>The aspect of anguish and
>despair is changed for that of gratitude, and triumph, and
>adoration. The language and the
>looks, and terrible struggles, and
>loud desperate depreciation, tell convincingly, as the parties
>themselves
>declare that they are in deadly conflict with the old serpent. The
>perspiration rolls off the
>anguished victims; their very hair is moistened. Some pass through
>this exhausting conflict
>several times; others but once. There is no appetite for food; many
>will eat nothing for a
>number of days. They do not
>sleep, though they may lie down with their eyes shut." (The Revival
>We Need, 57-58).
>
>c. Martyn Lloyd-Jones: "Indeed, it comes nearer to being the
>rule in revival that certain
>phenomena begin to manifest themselves-phenomena such as these: men
>and women are not only convicted of sin, but they are convicted by
>an agony with respect of
>sin. It is not merely that they see that they are sinners and that
>they must believe in the
>Saviour, it comes to them with such overwhelming force
>that they become even physically ill. They are in a literal agony
>of soul.... This agony, this
>terrible conviction-you may get that in revival.
>People are in an agony of soul and groaning. They may cry and sob
>and agonies audibly. But it
>does not always even stop at that. Sometimes people are so
>convicted and feel the power of the
>Spirit to such an extent that they faint and fall to the ground.
>Sometimes there are even
>convulsions, physical convulsions. And sometimes people seem to
>fall into a state of
>unconsciousness, into a kind of
>trance, and may remain like that for hours." (Revival, 110-111).
>
>
>2. Emotionalism.
>a. A real revival will produce certain excitement: persons are
>intellectual, volitional and
>emotional. Therefore, a real revival will affect the whole self,
>including emotions.
>Lloyd-Jones: here are tendencies, undoubtedly in most revivals, to
>an emotional element. I do
>not think there has ever been a revival without that being present.
>Some people have been moved
>very deeply and profoundly, and, sometimes, others behave in a very
>excitable manner during a
>period of revival.' (Revival, 133).
>
>b. Unquestionably, personal enthusiasm is intimately related to
>a true revival; but we can
>also point out that "it is no certain indication of a genuine
>revival, that there is great
>excitement.... It maybe an excitement produced not by the power of
>divine truth, but by
>artificial stimulus applied to the imagination and the passions, for
>the very purpose of
>producing commotion both
>within and without."(Sprague, Lectures on Revival, 13).
>
>c. Besides, it is possible to run the risk that the revival may
>find itself dissipated into
>"enthusiasm" and disintegrated into schism.
>
>d. Mark Pollard states that there is a school of thought which
>strangles the awakening,
>because it demands a control of the emotions. Nevertheless, we must
>differentiate between
>fanaticism and emotionalism.
>a. This phenomenon is not at all new. It appears once and
>again in church history.
>Lloyd-Jones: "Under the influence of this mighty power, people may
>literally fall to the ground under conviction of sin, or even faint,
>and remain in a state of
>unconsciousness, perhaps for a considerable time." (Revival, 134).
>
>b. There are some biblical examples which make reference to the
>experience of
>falling before the presence of God. Revelation 1.17.
>
>c. Some others, who were overthrown by the power of God were
>unbelievers. John 18.6; Acts 26.14.
>
>d. Church history also registers a number of examples related
>to the experience.
>
>For example, Saint Teresa (1515-1582) described this state as
>follows:
>"The soul is fully awake as regards God, but wholly asleep as
>regards things of this word and in respect of herself.
>
>During the short time the union lasts, she is as it were deprived of
>every feeling, and even if she would, she could not think of any
>single thing.
>Thus she needs to employ no artifice in order to arrest the use of
>her understanding: it remains so stricken with inactivity that
>she neither knows what she loves, nor in what manner she loves, nor
>what she wills.
>In short, she is utterly dead to the things of the world and lives
>solely in God.... I do not
>even know whether in this state she has enough life left to breathe.
> It seems to me she has not; or at least that if she does breathe,
>she
>is unaware of it. Her intellect would fain understand something of
>what is going on within her,
>but it has so little force now that it can act in no way whatsoever.
> So a person who falls into
>a deep faint appears as if dead....
>
>Thus does God, when he raises a soul to union with himself, suspends
>the natural action of all
>her faculties. She neither sees, hears, nor understands, so long
>as she is united with God. But this time is always short and it
>seems even shorter than it is.
>God establishes himself in the interior of this soul in
>such a way, that when she returns to herself, it is wholly
>impossible for her to doubt that she
>has been in God, and God in her." (The Interior Castle, 313-314).
>
>e. Among Protestants, reports about awakenings show that states
>of ecstasy were common.
>
>f. It is worth making clear that this kind of manifestations
>not always have God as the
>source of power. Some are not genuine. Edwards: "As influences of
>the true Spirit abounded, so
>did falsifications. The devil showed himself active in
>the imitation of both the current and the extraordinary influences
>of the Holy Spirit of
>God....?
>
>*How do we discern the difference? 1) spiritual discernment, 2)
>experience (Heb. 5:13-14), 3)
>ask them what theye feeling.
>
>In revivals, lots of mistakes have been made because people didn
>discern that
>the devil is also active in revival and will try to counterfeit to
>undermine and
>disrupt the revival. E.g., Pablo felt that at the beginning of the
>Toronto Blessing they weren
>discerning enough to tell what was God and what was the devil, but
>just accepted it all as being
>from God. This leads to some people seeing demonic things and
>writing off the whole move of God.
>
>
>Spirits we need to discern: 1) Spirit of God, 2) spirit of the
>flesh, and 3) evil spirit.
>I Thessalonians 5:21 est all things, hold fast to that which is
>good ?
>As leaders we are responsible to God in this. We need to ask for
>discernment, we need to judge
>manifestations and keep things in order (God order).

>The question on the table is, "is this revival contemporary to us.
>Are we receiving the first
>drops, is it coming soon?" We have been seeing signs, statistics,
>etc. that lead us to believe
>that we are receiving the first drops of this mighty end-time
>outpouring. If this is the case,
>then contemporary revival will mean final revival.
>
>All those revivals we evaluated were local/regional and limited in
>duration. The final revival
>predicted in Scripture is going to be world-wide, and the goal is
>that every tongue confess that
>Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
>
>[note: Pensacola ?one of the problems is that they kept the revival
>there. Stephen Hill was
>invited to preach all over the world but he declined. This is a way

>True Revival is Mission Focused
>
>1. Living principle: the primary and overriding reason for the
>existence of the
>church is
> mission, understood as proclaiming and extending the kingdom
>of God.
>a. C.S. Lewis: "The church exists for nothing else but to draw
>men to Christ, to
>make them little Christs." (Mere Christianity, 169).
>
>b. Mission is a key element in the renewal of the church.
>Lovelace: "This
>tendency to forget the redemptive emergency in the world and
>concentrate on
>enjoying dominion in a part of it has been a continual temptation to
>the church.
>The shape of the early church described in Acts, quartered together
>like an army
>garrison or a troop of nomadic pilgrims in an alien land, reflects a
>corrected
>sense of mission which apparently persisted through the early
>Christian era
>until Roman civilization was permeated with witnesses to the Gospel"
>(Dynamics
>of Spiritual Life, 147).
>
>2. Historical illustration: John Wesley (1 703-1791), in his
>The Twelve Rules:
>"You have nothing to do but to save souls. Therefore spend and be
>spent in this
>work. It is not your business to preach so many times; but to save
>as many
>souls as you can; to bring as many sinners as you possibly can to
>repentance,
>and with all your power to build them up in that holiness, without
>which they
>cannot see the Lord."
>
>3. Practical application:
>a. The church that does not have the salvation of the lost as
>its primary
>driving focus should reevaluate the reason for its existence and why
>it
>continues to function.
>
>b. As a church considers the mission to which God has called
>it, many changes
>can take place that would otherwise be strenuously resisted.
>
>c. In evaluating the mission focus of your church it is
>sometimes informative to
>consider the expenditure of resources. Is your church investing the
>best, in
>human and material terms, to develop the mission the Lord has
>entrusted his
>followers?
>
>d. Evaluate your present ecclesiastical structure and strategy;
>is your ministry
>enhanced or hindered by them?
>
>e. If God is not doing all that He wants in the context of your
>present
>structure and strategy, abandon them and create new ones under the
>guidance of
>the Holy Spirit.
>
>C. Missiological Impulse
>
>1. As the NT sees it, a true revival, that is, a church life
>lived in the
>power of the Holy Spirit will be marked by two key activities:
>witness and
>worship.
>
>*Sometimes we forget that the purpose of revival is not for us to
>feel well, but
>for us to WORSHIP the Lord and to WITNESS to the lost. E.g., Acts
>1:8 ?the
>reason for the power is for us to be witnesses.
>
>a. The missionary spirit is one of the major characteristics of
>a revival.
>
>b. Not all Christians are meant to be evangelists, with a
>special calling
>to
>proclaim the Gospel to those who have not yet received it; but all
>Christians
>are meant to be witnesses.
>
>c. A church in whose preaching there is the authority of the
>Spirit, in
>whose worship there is the joy of the Spirit, in whose fellowship
>there is the
>love of
>the Spirit, and in whose service the gifts of the Spirit are in full
>use--such a
>church will witness to Christ just by being herself.
>
>d. We are to be made like Jesus, not for our own sake only, but
>in order
>that
>through us others may be guided to Him.
>
>2. Recent Evangelical statements have affirmed the
>missiological
>implication of
>the work of the Spirit in and through the people of God.

>1. Secular opposition.

>Anacondia has had guys get on stage with a knife to stab him. He turned around in time to see
the guy coming, n the name of Jesus, stop!?The guy fell backward like he hit a glass wall.
>
>At his crusades, shamans, warlocks and witches gather and hold hands to pray against him.
When he rebukes satan:  come against you in the name of Jesus!??they all got knocked back to
the ground.
>
>a. Uproars and violent disturbances. Father Nash (letter, May 11, 1826): "The work of God
moved forward in power in some places against dreadful opposition. Mr. Finney and I have been
burned in effigy. We have frequently been disturbed in our religious meetings. Sometimes the
opposers make a noise in the house of God. ...There is almost as much writing, intrigue, lying
and reporting of lies, as there would be if we were on the eve of a presidential election. ... But I
think the work will go on.'
>
>b. False accusations, Charles Finney: 'God assured me that He would be with me and uphold
me; that no opposition should prevail against me; that I had nothing to do in regard to this matter
but to keep about my work and wait for the salvation of God."
>
>A cop came to an Anacondia crusade to arrest him, but got out of the car and was hit to the
ground by the Holy Spirit and stayed there for the rest of the mtg. He didn know why, so
Anacondia explained to him, and today he a leader in an evangelical church. He was also in
charge of security for Anacondia crusades for a time.
>
>Finney was accused for using nquiry room? sing tracts/handbills? arsh pulpit language?
omen to pray in mixed gatherings? etc.
>
>Deiros wanted to ask Randy Clark about barking, roaring, etc. ell, to my knowledge, during
the crusade and afterward, I remember no more than 15 cases of people crawling, roaring,
barking, etc. These experiences a lot of publicity, not because the church leaders made it known,
but when those manifestations happened the secular press was there. They didn pay attention to
the thousands who were confessing sins, or repenting, or laughing with joy, etc., but to the weird
manifestations, and they broadcast these things all over the world. All around the world it was
said that the characteristic of the revival was the barking, crawling, roaring, etc.
>
>Deiros allowed a TV channel to come film one of their services. Normally their services were
calm, but on that day, one young lady manifested demonically in a powerful way. The idea
presented to the public was that Central Baptist Church was characterized by this. The other
Baptist pastors and churches got together and criticized it. The devil will look for times and ways
to exploit these opportunities to discredit moves of God.
>
>The Vineyard has been wonderful and outstanding in the ministry of healing. But they have
been very weak in deliverance and spiritual warfare. So, in discussing this with Randy Clark, he
realized they were very na 鴳 e in the beginning by assuming all manifestations were of the Holy
Spirit. While the Spirit is operating, the devil is too, mimicking the Spirit activity, trying to
create confusion and trouble, and put an end to the move of the Spirit. We need discernment
(which is a gift of the Spirit) to know whether it a human spirit, or evil spirit, or God Spirit.
>
>Randy Clark said in Deiros?church 3 yrs ago, f you want to be used by the Lord in healing in
a mighty way, you have to reckon with the fact that not all people will be healed. If you are not
willing to accept this, you are not ready to be used this way.?

>------------------------------------------
>
>q We can know the exact time, but we can know the general time (that why he repeatedly
says, e on guard?.
>q Jesus mentions 4 possibilities (4 watches of the night):
>
>o The first watch represents the 1st 300 yrs of Christianity ?irst watch?of history because
night began. Cf. Luke 22:53 very day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay
a hand on me. But this is your hour-- when darkness reigns.?
>
>o The second watch (midnight watch)
>?the darkest hour of the night, when we're in deepest sleep. Historians call the Middle Ages the
ark ages.?1000 years of darkness; the few Bibles were chained to altars, the Gospel not
preached, rampant idolatry, etc. Yet a few lights shone and watched for the Lord (Francis of
Assisi, Teresa of Avila, Thomas Aquinas, etc.)
>
>o The third watch (rooster crows)
>?first indication of life in the night. Indication of the coming day. E.g., Protestant Reformation
in 16th Century. Churches in Europe used to have golden rooster at top of tower (symbol of the
Reformation).
>
>o The fourth watch (morning watch)
>?Pablo believes that we belong to the generation that has been called by the Holy Spirit to keep
watch for the Lord to come.
>
> The Sun of Righteousness is about to rise on the horizon of history. He will put an end to sin
and suffering and lead us into victorious reigning with Him in the New Jerusalem. The day is
about to break. The only thing he asks us to do is to complete the task he commanded us to do.
The servants of the first 3 watches have been faithful, but did not see the fulfillment of the
Promise. But we have all the possibilities to see the King coming on the clouds of glory and take
up His Kingdom forever and ever and ever. This is why contemporary revivals is not just to be
studied, but something we are to be participants in, to bring in the greatest harvest ever on the
face of the earth.

ContemparyRevivalE notes

  • 1. From: "Laura Sun" >Subject: True Revival is Leadership Embracing >Date: Thu, 23 Nov 2000 17:53:20 > >True Revival is Leadership Embracing > >1. Living principle: visionary persons are needed to lead the >church into >revival and the fullness of its call. >a. The church goes nowhere without faithful, persevering, >visionary leadership. >Tanner: 'The primary factor then in the fostering of revival is the >human agent >or agents." Lovelace: "Redemption comes under the direction of >leaders whom God >raises up in his sovereign mercy in response to the deep longing and >intercession of the laity generated under the pressure of defeat or >suffering" >(Dynamics of Spiritual Life, 65). > >b. The early church had visionary leaders: the apostles, and >others (Phillip, >etc.) > >c. The established leadership generally rejects visionary >leaders as their >ministries begin, but the fruit is impossible to ignore. >*What do you do with the authority structure when they don flow >with the >Spirit? Power is ability, authority is licensing. Pharisees asked >Jesus, n >which authority do you do these things??Jesus was using power, >having authority >from God. > >d. Visionary leaders are characterized by two basic things: > 1) a clear call from God (they often began their ministries >on the basis of >powerful prophetic words, visions or dreams); and, > 2) a clear vision from God (they demonstrated their >visionary leadership as >they entered into and continued in the development of their >ministries). >*Vision is not static, but has to be kept fresh by the Lord. > >e. Some other characteristics of visionary leaders: hard work,
  • 2. >positive >attitude, wisdom and power (authority), perseverance, courage >through faith, >communicators. > >*creativity; recover forgotten truths; boldness to open new ground >in the face >of opposition. They lead the church into mission in a way it never >believed >possible. > >*They have a clear idea of what the goal is. They are like Moses or >Joshua, >leading the people into the Promised Land, not just having them do >circles in >the desert. > >*When revival hits, forget about vacation! Anacondia works harder >than anyone >Deiros knows.
