Ride the Storm: Navigating Through Unstable Periods / Katerina Rudko (Belka G...

1. How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary
texts?
2. In our main production we wanted to subvert the
conventions of the drama genre in terms of the
stereotypes of the characters.
We wanted to draw on the way that people judge
others based purely on their appearance, and in the
process, encourage the audience to consider their
own principles and values at the same time.
3. As shown in the screenshots above, the main character is quick to jump to conclusions
about a stranger based on something she sees before. While doing this, we wanted to
conform to the conventions of the drama genre in the sense of creating a realistic setting
and relatable characters. This makes our film more authentic and believable, and will
therefore make the outcome less predictable.
4. Here is the URL for our radio trailer:

The two advertising products reflect
the style we were aiming to achieve.
The film poster is gritty and realistic,
and includes one of the main props
used in the film which leads to an
act of prejudice. Similarly, the radio
trailer implies the realistic nature of
our film and the moral message
which is carried in the narrative.
I think that our ancillary texts are
very effective in selling our product
because they capture the realistic
aspect of our film, as well as the
darker side to the narrative which
deals with the harsh reality of
prejudice.
5. Before creating our film poster, I researched professional posters like this War Horse one in order to
understand what components go into the process. After analysing this War Horse poster, it became
clear that the image and the title of the film are the most important things which need to stand out.
This is why I decided to integrate ‘Jumping to Conclusions’ with the image of the phone, but also to
make it stand out by singling it out in colour. Where the War Horse poster uses a tagline to describe
the journey of the characters, I wanted to keep the message from my poster clear, which is why I
didn’t use one. Also, I did not want to give too much away as to what our film is about, so I opted
for a minimalist design.

7. Here are some
more film posters
that I analysed (of
different genres to
get a broader
understanding of
what components
make up a film
poster
This way I could use
these components in
my film poster, and
choose which
techniques to use
and which to leave
out according to what
best represented our
film
8. One of the components I knew I had to include if I wanted
my poster to look professional, was the steel tongs text
that always appears at the bottom of film posters.
After doing research into the font and research into what
the text usually includes (e.g. the names of the cast
members, the producer, the music composer…) I created
the same text for our film poster.
9. Our finished ancillary
products represents our
film very efficiently
because they both
capture the message
behind our film. They are
both simple and
accessible, and I believe
for these reasons, they
are effective in selling our
product.
