The document outlines a pitch by Pixelate Entertainment for a teen drama film. It discusses researching similar films like Juno and Mean Girls to understand the genre. Research with their target audience of 15-16 year old girls found they preferred a dramatic film set in school with exaggerated characters. Each member provides an individual synopsis, with common themes of a social outcast character in a new school. The final synopsis combines elements, focusing on a counter-typical character's isolation through music and bookends of her alone in her bedroom and reading in class.
2. Our hybrid genre of teen film
- Teen romance/coming of age film
- The audience can relate to the issues that are presented
- Would suit our target audience of girls aged 15-16
- We are interested in this genre of film
3. Real media research
- The teen dramas we researched comprised of Juno, Perks of being a wallflower, mean girls and
legally blonde.
-These teen films reiterated the idea that we wanted to create a 'coming of age' film. We hope to
utilise both stereotypes and countertypes as we feel the combination will create a contrast to the
misconceptions regarding teen lifestyle.
- One convention that is important to use is a pop/rock soundtrack; as it will appeal to a wider
target audience. Like Juno and Perks we will create an 'underdog' character, which see's them
struggle through adolescent life.
-We were inspired by mise-en-scene to set our teen drama in a high school; as this is an easy way
of showing different groups of people e.g. popular, geeks, rebels, etc.
-POV shots will be constructed in our teen film- they help the audience to see things from that
characters perspective.
4. Target audience research
. Our research through the help of our target audience made it evident to us that people would rather prefer to see a
dramatic film
. With a female lead as within a school
.To present exhaggerated/ stereotypical characters.
. It was also suggested that the rating for the film should be a 15 in order to appeal to a wider audience and have
more flexibility with its content.
Our research was most helpful as it helped us realise what our audience would want as well as how much our
intended film would be successful towards our target market.
5. Individual synopsis - Laura
- I would like the film to be a ‘coming of age’ film as it is relatable to our
audience
- Pop/rock music would be used in the background as teenage girls are
interested in this genre of music
- Set in a school; relatable to our audience
- Main character is girl who is different from others and is doesn’t fit in to any
particular group within the school
- No dialogue or voiceovers will be used
6. Individual synopsis - Lauren
- Will have no narrative or voice over, as I hope to create a sense of
characterisation throughout the title sequences, redolent of Juno.
- The opening scene will see a girl joining a new school; she is out casted
from society and feels trapped and isolated from everyone else.
- The film will see her play with the transition from teen to adulthood in a
comedic yet sensitive manner.
-I hope the film will address current social issues that face many adolescents,
creating a sense of verisimilitude.
7. Individual synopsis - Robyn
I had the idea of a girl being surrounded by friends and entering a school, however through a complex use of camera
angles and editing techniques it will be made evident that despite being surrounded by lots of people she will in fact
feel isolated, suggesting she is uncomfortable conforming to the norms of society. This was to be a drama as it is all
about a young girl struggling to find her true identity within a world of false representations of themselves.
8. Individual synopsis - Ben
- The genre of drama
- No dialogue; as the less words used, the more people have to think of what’s going on
- Beginning scene to be in a bedroom or a character walking down the street
- The music played will be quite chilled, meaningful and somewhat depressing
- At the end of the opening sequence something will happen that will keep the audience
on the edge of their seats
- Editing techniques; make the appearance and presentation look professional
- Use different camera shots because a variety will be much more effective
9. Final synopsis
- Coming of age film; targeted at girls aged 15-16
- Main character will be a social out cast within a new school
- Will start with her getting ready in her bedroom and finish with her reading
in a classroom; highlighting her isolation
- Will use pop/rock music as this was the genre that was most popular with
our target audience.
- Doesn’t follow the lives of the ‘popular’ girls however will look at the journey
of a counter typical character.
