This is a quick overview of what we at Keep Calm And Carry try to encourage people to do when they are contacted by police, especially when they are also a carry permit holder.
3. Pull to the right.
Pull to a safe location as soon as possible, not miles
down the road. Indicate your intention with your blinker.
4. Once Stopped…
• Turn on your hazard lights.
• Turn the car off, or to auxiliary setting.
• Keep your hands on the wheel.
– Consider rolling down windows.
– Turn on your dome light to offer more visibility.
• Don’t go digging around for things.
• Stay in your car unless asked to step out.
5. MANNERS!
• Remain calm, polite, and respectful.
• Refrain from emotions, try to relax.
• Don’t argue. (That’s what courts are for.)
• Be sincere and apologetic.
• Establish a professional rapport.
6. Disclosure?
• Some states require you to inform the officer.
– Consider disclosing, even if you don’t have to.
• Telling the officer says you are a good guy.
• You undergo a background check to gain a permit.
• It opens a dialog how to proceed safely.
– We recommend saying “I am licensed to carry and I
(do / don’t) Have it on me.
– Allow the officer to instruct you or for them take
control of it.
7. Have a nice day.
• When the officer is done, pull safely back to the
road and continue on your way, or find a parking
lot to recompose yourself.
