Lake Maggiore is located in northern Italy and extends into Switzerland. It is 193 meters high, covers an area of 212 square kilometers, and is the westernmost of the three major prealpine lakes in Italy. The lake is 68 kilometers long and its width varies from 3 to 5 kilometers wide, reaching 10 kilometers at its widest point between the towns of Pallanza and Stresa.
