In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge form and convention of real media products? Of
Use of documentary codes and conventions Within my media project…
… Quotes extracted from Analysing Codes and Convention of a Documentary blog entry on Friday, 17 September 2010 “ Interviews with.. • Victims ,Witness Professionals and Experts - Interviewers are used to show a point of view Screenshots from own media project Mise-en-scene conveys they are professionals/ experts in their field Camera is not directly facing the interviewer all the night allows audience to feel comfortable watching and forces impact in other areas when ‘hard’ messages are passed through the experts. Screen shots from Channel 4 doc - I'm Turning into a Giant Medical mise-en-scene very similar to what I have used in my project Screen shots from Channel 4 doc – Who Do You Think You Were? The use of female professionals , however dealing with both emotional and health related issues
Voice-over/ Narration • Information tone “ Through out the project as being the presenter I keep a professional yet low key informal tone so my target market can relate to what I am saying and are not out off or bored through the tone in which I take” Screenshot from BBC 3 Documentary Presenter walking towards camera as in talking to audience directly in setting relating to subject Screenshot from my documentary I am also walking towards the camera informing the audience on a personal level into the theme of my documentary in a location in which my target audience will be able to relate to their own lives The way in which I walk towards the camera is also present in many other documentaries and in one of the programs which I used for research purpose Use of hand movements to keep interest Screenshot from Snog , Marry , Avoid …
Media is becoming more and more web based through web 2.0 and therefore I developed the normal form of presenting and narrating through videoing through a web cam which provided my project with a unique technique Confronting the audience Forcing them to listen Links back to target audience as young teens are use to using social networking and Skype animated texts appear here Animated text forces the main point of the narration and leave in grave on the viewers brain. New futuristic technique
“ Female voices are used on sensitive emotional issues such as rape cases” Final scene of my documentary is talking about teen suicide which is a very emotional issue. I choose to conform to this documentary convention and used a female within the image however I developed this convention by deciding to have no narration just simply non-digectic music Leaving the audience to read the text made the fact personal to their own lives and more thought provoking
The Narration is seen as the all powerful view the audience believe they have specialised knowledge Within this scene I express that I as the presenter am In the same situation as the target audience however I have “chosen to investigate” the issues. Showing I understand there is more to the issue then most teens however I am part of my target audience, and they can relate to me. Throughout the doc I have also used a female voice all the way through showing that girls as acting yob-ish and wild as well as the stereotypical ‘lads' “ Like any other teenager” “ I wonder” Also providing shocking statistics shows the audience I have carried out research into the subject. Following a trend from BBC 3 Drinking documentaries… ‘ Cherry goes drinking’ ‘ Ready, set , Drink!’ ? Male voices are used on serious hard hitting narration for example fact and figures I have used only non-dirgetic sound so the audience read the text and digests it better and at a more personal level
Use of documentary codes and conventions Within my media project…
There are three basic styles of cutaways: Storytelling, Emotional and General coverage … Storytelling Cut away - They tell/add to the storyline within the film this could be using image of road signs, exterior shots of the places in which interviews are taken place, images of characters entering places. Screenshot from my documentary When entering the sixth form showing est. cutaways of going into the school. Audience follow the camera in Showing the teens involved are normal day teens and audience relate to our friends Screenshot from BBC3 documentary – Love me , Love my face Setting the scene , showing where doc is set Screenshot from BBC3 documentary- Thailand: Tourism and the Truth – Stacey Dooley Investigates - Showing social environment doc is based in
challenge From the title sequence I have repeated cutaways further in the documentary to show reflection and looking to the audiences past experiences Present day , fun , care free Looking back was it the right thing to do? Instead of traditional emotional cutaways I have used repatriation and special effects to create emotion Screenshot from my documentary Most emotion cutaway scene at the end ,- conflicts which message/stats and makes the audience realise this could be them if they carry on Screenshot from C4- KATIE: MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS More traditional emotional cutaways showing grief , pain and making the audience feel for the subject Emotion Cutaways -images of deceased family members, hugging, walking hand in clean. Clean natural symbolisation of friendship/Love. These types of images have a unique power Screen shots from Channel 4’s Who Do You Think You Were? Tears in eye – traditional use of emotional cutaway
General coverage - To express a type of situation using small images of actives for example going to the supermarket: parking the car in the car park , getting a trolley , browsing the products/food , paying at the tell , leaving the shop , re-entering the car. These using small shots which allow the audience to watch large section of time coverage quickly. … Collective outlining the theme of my documentary and the atmosphere of the partying youths Acid colours Unaware careless Screenshot from C4- Jamie Oliver’s dream schooll Bad attitudec young Normal teens in some ways outsiders Sets the scene and uses same techniques as real documentaries in the media
Real Footage … Opening Footage was filmed a t a real house party so the film has real qualities to it and signs of realism as it is not perfect and the audience feel their are part of the party through the hand held camera and fast pace. Not perfectly framed videos adds to realism …
