An early merry Christmas and very happy New
Year to you Streatham! We want to welcome you
to Issue 18 of Heart Streatham magazine which
is our last issue of 2015. There is much on in
our What’s On starting page 34 (the sharp-eyed
amongst you will spot the Christmas festivities
put on by the BID on page 19!). And we have yet
more news of some great new openings in the
Parish Pump on page 10.
The inStreatham BID provides a coupon for
post-Black Friday local shopping savings on the
High Road with a helpful list and map for where
these can be found. This is followed by our MP,
Chuka Umunna, writes for us on supporting your
local small businesses in Streatham on Small
Business Saturday on page 20.
Our article on Crossrail 2 and the potential
opportunity it represents has caused more ruckus
and excitement than anything we’ve published
so far. So much so that our local civic forum
Streatham Action will hold a public meeting at
Hideaway to lay out the opportunity Crossrail 2
offers and what we, the community need to do to
make it happen. Read the latest starting page 6.
We lost one of our contributors and a true
Streatham hero, after we went to press last
month, and John Brown remembers Brian Bloice
and his influence on every part of our area on
page 29.
Our lovely advertisers, Anthony Gold Law,
recently published their South London Business
Survey and the key messages of the dynamism
of the thriving business environment in south
London are here as a special eight-page pullout
starting page 21
And finally, there’s a free book offer from a local
celebrity author on page 38, a roundup on the
Streatham Redskins performances on page 39,
a new parks co-operative you can get
involved with on page 42 and local police and
safety briefing from our neighbourhood police on
page 43.
We will be launching our Streatham Directory
in February to provide the handy list for “go to”
businesses in the area. For a limited time this
we will be available for local businesses at a
discounted price. Email info@heartstreatham.

November has been a busy
month in Streatham.
Hundreds of people gathered at Streatham's
War Memorial for the largest Remembrance
Day Service in South London. The multi-faith,
multicultural service was dignified, as always,
and led by Roger Bowdery in commemoration
of those who served their country in wartime
so that we can continue to enjoy the freedoms
we do.
As part of the community effort to reclaim
Streatham Green continues in earnest, the
long trailed Dyce Fountain restoration has
started after many donations to fund the work
have been collected locally. It is believed this
is the first work carried out on the fountain
since 1933.
West Norwood Crematorium was full and
overflowing with people wishing to pay their
respects to Brian Bloice, a true Streatham
hero and great contributor to this magazine.
John Brown of the Streatham Society gave a
moving tribute to Brian, and his eulogy is on
page 19.
Streatham Action announced their AGM
on the 9th of December. We need eager
volunteers who want only to have the
wherewithal and ability to change things
here for the better – Streatham Action has
everything else in place. Come along at

Our article about Crossrail 2 last month has
had an amazing response and has ignited the
community. We even saw flatteringly similar
words appearing in other London media on the
subject! We can confirm we have the support
of all of our Streatham councillors and Chuka
Umunna MP. See our update and how you
can sign the petition on the following pages.
The Streatham Action AGM will be
immediately followed by a public meeting on
bringing Crossrail to Streatham, to be held
at the Hideaway on 9th December at 7pm.
Come along to see and hear what needs to
be done to make this happen. The bar will be
open!
Runners from Herne Hill Harriers, our local
athletics club, and skaters from the Streatham
Supremes have taken another haul of medals
for superb performances during November.
Herne Hill runners also made up the 1st & 3rd
place teams in the London Youth Games on
Parliament Hill & finished as the 1st 4 places in
the Epsom Downs League.
A social highlight of the month was the gala
celebration for homeless charity, Spires, at
the Hideaway. A sold-out evening with a
great variety of entertainment MC'd brilliantly
by Sion James. Local business and residents
had contributed some fabulous prizes to the
auction in aid of the charity, which raised over
£3783!
We had a fabulous night at Beacon Bingo's
celebration of 53 years of bingo at the historic
Streatham Hill Theatre. We may not have
won at roulette or bingo, but we loved sitting
in the original seats and admiring the stunning
listed interior, the cocktails, and the live music!
TfL exhibited plans for improvements to
the St Leonards junction at at the library,
and we think they are underwhelming and
could potentially make the intersection more
congested and dangerous. Thankfully this is
still in “pre-consultation” mode so we can all
add our voices to find a better plan.

Crossrail 2 for Streatham
Last month we caused quite a stir by
highlighting the unique opportunity that
presented itself to get Streatham onto the
Crossrail2 map. The response has been
phenomenal, and Streatham Action Transport
Group's Chair, Neil Salt and his team of
cross-party and non-political volunteers, have
been tireless in the effort to make TfL give
pause for proper investigation into the case for
Streatham.
Until October,
Crossrail 2 was
planned to go
between Clapham
Junction and
Wimbledon via an
interchange with
the Northern line at
Tooting Broadway.
But now Balham
is the preferred
location due to
adverse geological
conditions at
Tooting Broadway
(and Tooting
Bec). Streatham
Action proposes
that substituting
Streatham for
Balham would
better meet many
of the stated
objectives of the
project. It is a long
shot, but a shot
worth taking, since
Streatham is not
being considered
to be a part of any
major transport
infrastructure
upgrades planned
to happen in most
of our lifetimes! And this is what appears on
Crossrail2's own maps
The current route rationale for Crossrail2 was
determined in 2009, when TfL identified a
set of locations, stations, lines, and corridors
to meet strategic goals. Eleven alternatives
emerged, and were modelled for feasibility
over 2010-11. Streatham was evaluated as
part of a route going south from Victoria via
Clapham North, Streatham Hill, Streatham,
Norbury, and Thornton Heath through to East
7. www.heartstreatham.co.uk 7
For illustration only
Croydon. We think that this was the last time
Streatham was considered in any option.
Has TfL given consideration to a potential
Streatham station as part of the route through
Clapham Junction through to Wimbledon and
beyond?
Curving the route through Streatham rather
than sharply dog-legging through Balham
would allow for a smoother south easterly
approach to Wimbledon, potentially also then
allowing for the reinstatement of a Tooting
Broadway station on the route by avoiding the
geological issues that make tunnelling from
the north prohibitively expensive. Since the
route has already been shifted east, a small
additional shift to include Streatham and its
superior potential for regeneration compared
with Balham (especially in conjunction with
Tooting Broadway) is worth investigating.
It is now our priority to provide evidence
to TfL that the feasibility of a Streatham
option has substantially changed since it
was last considered and rejected, and to
have its inclusion on the route from Clapham
Junction to Wimbledon properly considered.
Val Shawcross has asked TfL to share the
data and output from their investigation of
Crossrail2 for Streatham on our behalf several
weeks ago. We still look forward to receiving
this. We also want to ask TfL to evaluate the
route we propose, assuming that it has never
done so.
Tooting Broadway
8. www.heartstreatham.co.uk8
In the past, the key reason given by TfL for
rejecting the Streatham option was that they
did not think it would alleviate overcrowding
on the Underground. TfL themselves have
told us that many thousands of people travel
to Balham, Tooting Bec, and Brixton from
and via Streatham by train, bus, and rail.
Have Crossrail2 considered (and applied their
modelling to the consideration) that a Crossrail
station in Streatham would divert many of
them away from these overcrowded tube
lines?
A Streatham station would also positively
impact the lethal and polluted A23, which is
also the responsibility of TfL. There have been
41 people killed or seriously injured along this
stretch of road in the five years between 2010
and 2014, an average of eight a year.
TfL thinks putting the station at Balham would
reduce overcrowding on the Northern line,
but some experts say Crossrail 2 could well
make Northern Line congestion worse, not
better. Since TfL has not made public their
modelling for Crossrail 2, ukrail.blogspot.co.uk
has created their own model (See the detail at
http://ukrail.blogspot.co.uk/2015/11/crossrail-
2-journey-time-modelling.html) based on train
capacity and estimated journey time to present
a pretty logical argument that more people
are likely to switch to the Northern Line from
Crossrail than the other way round; "no one
already on a Northern Line train approaching
Balham and heading to London Bridge,
the City or Canary Wharf will change onto
Crossrail 2" and furthermore "Anyone on a
Crossrail 2 train from Wimbledon and heading
to London Bridge, or the south part of the City
will change onto the Northern Line."
From this, TfL's insistence that Crossrail 2
will relieve the Northern Line by intersecting
with it seems to be not just wrong, but likely
to achieve the opposite effect, particularly
at Balham. A station at Streatham would
accommodate the thousands of commuters
from Streatham, Norbury, Furzedown, and
Crown Point- a much wider catchment area
- who currently make their way by train and
bus to the Northern (or Victoria) Line every
morning. It would also allow passengers
travelling via Wimbledon to transfer onto trains
to the City and London Bridge at Streatham
–hopefully by the time Crossrail 2 is built, the
current shambolic Southern service will have
been replaced and upgraded with one that is
worthy of the name!
The population of London is expected to
reach 9.5 million by 2024, but boroughs with
young population profiles are growing fastest.
Lambeth has one of the youngest profiles in
London, and is projected to grow by at least
an additional 29000 people by 2024, according
to London Reconnections. Streatham is a
part of Lambeth that contains a significant
development site around Streatham station
that could provide hundreds of new homes
and retail premises. It's also Lambeth's
objective to reduce dependence on car use,
and as Streatham has one of the largest
proportions of car usage in the borough, it is
likely to make proportionally greater demands
on its already over-stretched transport
infrastructure than in other areas as car usage
decreases.
As we said last month, nothing will happen
unless Streatham shouts both loudly, and with
one voice. We are pleased to report that all
Streatham Councillors are on board.
Cllr. John Kazantsis is a member of the
Streatham Action Transport Group, and he
wrote to us "On behalf of all the Streatham
Labour councillors I would like to say that we
absolutely support the call to bring Crossrail
2 to Streatham. This, as you rightly say, is an
unrepeatable opportunity and we as Labour
councillors in Streatham will do everything
we can to try to ensure this vitally important
transport infrastructure link comes to
Streatham."
Streatham Action is a non-political group that
happens to include representatives from each
main political party on its committee. Last
week it set up a petition that we urge you to
sign by going to www.streathamaction.org.uk/
content/bring-crossrail-2-streatham and come
to the Streatham Action Public Meeting at the
Hideaway on Wednesday 9th December at

Learning Good Food at an Early Age
bY PATRiCiA SAuER
At Cavendish Lodge Nursery, we've been busy
helping Streatham's smallest residents know
about good food. Recently we took a close look
at meals served, the ingredients and activities
around food and found room for improvement. All
the food was, and still is, freshly cooked on site
by our kitchen staff but there was plenty of waste
at the end of the day. Was this really the right way
to fuel young lives?
We recruited a new head chef, Tepi Balla, from
the restaurant world rather than institutional
catering. He came with lots of ideas and
expertise; for example, rather than buying
weekly from the big supermarkets, under Tepi’s
regime, fresh and traceable meat was bought
from a nearby butcher, sustainable fish from a
fishmonger and fruit and veg delivered almost
daily from Covent Garden. Milk was changed to
organic, staple grocery items still came from a
wholesaler or the supermarket.
The children are fed often and lots in the nursery;
breakfast at 8.00am until high tea at 4.00pm,
without a budget increase for the changes. They
eat well and enjoy mealtimes and each age group
takes part in cooking activities weekly. They grow
herbs and veg in the gardens and the nursery
has recently taken a small plot in the Streatham
Community Garden at the Rookery. The older
children go there in the summer to tend their
plants.
The food now served is quite ambitious, with
lots of flavour and different tastes. The menus
and nutritional approach have been checked by
the Children’s Food Trust. The menus follow a
four week rotation and are changed twice a year.
There have been lengthy inspections, but we
know that we serve high quality and balanced
meals that satisfy CFT’s strict guidelines.
We're delighted the hard work resulted in
Cavendish Lodge winning the CFT excellence
award in Autumn 2015, the nursery equivalent
of a Michelin Start, and we're the first nursery in
London to do so

As a part of the Mayor's promise to improve
cycling in London, TfL has set up a programme
to create cycle-friendly routes through London
to identify, improve, as well as to traffic calm
existing routes to provide safe spaces for
cyclists. It has the Mayor, Dep't for Transport
and TfL behind it and is a great idea; what
could possibly go wrong?
Recently Lambeth, TfL and the charity Sustrans
launched a “pre-consultation” on closing
Estreham Road, which runs from Greyhound
Lane in front of Streatham Common Station
then becomes Natal Road ending in a junction
with Streatham High Road.
Estreham – Natal Roads are a notorious “rat
run” for motorists avoiding lights at the top
of Greyhound Lane and traffic levels are
said by Lambeth Council to be high for a
neighbourhood street meant to be part of a
traffic calmed cycle network.
Many residents who live near the route
would dearly love for the closure to happen.
Dangerous driving, pollution and commuters
taking up parking are several of the things they
would like to do without. Also having a way
that's safe for young kids to ride their bicycles
is a high priority for them.
However, many local residents complained
(fairly) that the launch event for the consultation
wasn't publicised well, so they weren't able to
attend. There have been two other public info
meetings and objections include the fact that
residents wanting to drive south would have
to exit via Natal Road and cross the A23 at an
intersection which is already the site of many
accidents, also adding time to journeys.
Lambeth's plan was to close the road for three
months to determine the impact on the area, as
they have in Loughborough Junction. This has
been delayed until at least March 2016 to give
time for residents to comment and speak to
councillors about the scheme.

The St Leonards Junction on the Streatham
High Road has been the bane of many a town
planner and traffic engineer. It has also been
the site of several accidents causing death or
serious injuries due to the design of the traffic
system and road building.
We were made aware over a year ago that
recommendations had been given to TfL that
could have inexpensively prevented most of
the accidents but were rejected, allegedly
because they would cause too much
disruption.
You'll understand our surprise when seeing
TfL's latest “pre-consultation” at the Tate
Library on the 21st of November that TfL
proposes not only to exceed that level of
disruption, but that, in our opinion, they
would fail to solve the underlying issues and
actually exacerbate them.
Cars heading south must turn right to join
the A23 from Tooting Bec Gardens whilst
pedestrians also want to cross at the junction,
but TfL only proposes moving the bus stop
up to the top of the hill ending near the traffic
lights and installing a pedestrian crossing
light by Streatham Green and a few other
minor bits. This is incredibly disappointing,
especially as TfL indicated to Streatham
Action's Transport sub-committee chair that
they were seeking radical solutions.

Small Business Saturday
CHuKA uMunnA
Our local small businesses are a huge part of
what makes Streatham great. So many people
work incredibly hard running and working in
small businesses in our community, whether
on the high road, tech, media and home starts,
or even our local import/export businesses.
I believe our local business community has
a bright future. The Business Improvement
District we campaigned for is doing so well
and there are so many new and exciting
enterprises starting in our community.
I know there is rightly a lot of pride in our small
businesses – and I am very proud to represent
so many. Businesses that not only help make
our community what it is but mean jobs and
incomes for so many people locally. I think
it is incredibly important that we don’t forget
to support our small businesses and all they
bring to our area.
That was why I originally wanted to bring Small
Business Saturday to the UK and to Streatham
in particular – the constituency that’s the
centre of the universe as far as I’m concerned.
I’d noticed in the US all the support that was
generated for local small businesses with the
Small Business Saturday started there, and I
wanted the same in our area.
On one of the biggest shopping days of the
year, it’s incredibly important we make sure
everyone remembers how much good it does
our whole community if everyone who lives
locally shops with local small businesses, or
if local businesses start doing more business
with each other. I believe we’re doing really
well in Streatham, but our businesses can do
even better if we all come together to support
what they do.
That’s what I’m asking everyone in Streatham
to do on the 5th
December. Support our small
businesses, celebrate what they do, and
take the time to visit some of the fantastic
businesses you may not have got a chance to
visit before.
22. Thank you to all the local
organisations who have helped
support us with the survey.
We appreciate your help and
value your support.
23. Welcome to the Anthony Gold South
London Business Survey 2015/2016.
We have started this survey with the
aim of tracking the views over time
of businesses based in South London.
Each year we will look to compare and
understand what trends are occurring
and how businesses feel the region is
progressing overall. Since we have
been established here for over 50
years, we want to understand what
makes being based south of the
river better for business and share
this knowledge with you.
Withthe election ofthenew Government
and forecasts of growth across London
this is a perfect time for us to begin
to gauge the temperature of south
London businesses and find out what
common issues we face together.
The survey shows a lot of optimism
and, interestingly, finding the right
staff is seen as the biggest constraint.
And, notwithstanding the current rail
pain, particularly at London Bridge,
transport links and the investment in
infrastructure are seen as big positives
for South London.
I’d like to thank all our respondents for
taking part, our partner organisations
and you for taking the time to read
it. I hope you find these survey
results interesting.

27. Conclusion
The Anthony Gold South London
Business survey 2015/2106 contains
many positive trends and there
is certainly a degree of optimism.
As head of our commercial
department I see the wide range
of problems that local businesses
face. I also see owners and directors
commitment to their work, as also
borne out by the survey. It is this
commitment that makes working
for businesses so rewarding.
David Wedgwood
Head of Commercial
Methodology
The 2015/2016 Anthony Gold business
survey documents the opinions of business
professionals based in South London. The
survey was conducted via email between
the 21st July and 10th August 2015. The results
have been converted into percentages for
ease of viewing. This survey is for your

BRIAN JOHN BLOICE
10 August 1939 - 29th October 2015
Brian, an analytical chemist by profession,
moved to Woodmansterne Road in Streatham
in 1976. From 1958, he volunteered at
archaeological digs, helping to establish
the Southwark and Lambeth Archaeological
Society in 1965. He was to be a leading
member for the next 50 years, in 1968, co-
directing the Norfolk House excavations,
where the remains of Delftware kilns were
discovered for the first time in the UK, and he
became President in 2015.
Shortly after moving to Streatham, Brian
joined local history group, The
Streatham Society, and was
soon helping to organise
their programme and local
history walks. He was a
member for almost 40
years being Chairman
at the time of his
death, and there is not
an area of town that
has not benefited from
his labours.
In 1986 Brian discovered
the first industrial building
in Britain to house the
Jacquard loom, The Streatham
Silk Mill, providing the basis on
which it was spot listed - literally hours
before demolition. He also helped ensure
the neighbouring Beehive Coffee Tavern
(designed by his favourite architect, Sir Ernest
George) was listed.
In the late 1980s Brian researched the
magnificent collection of photographs
taken by Emile Zola when he was in exile
in Norwood 1898-1899. He organised a
centenary Emile Zola conference in 1990 at
the Queens Hotel where Zola had stayed,
also assisting in the placing of a blue plaque
on at the hotel to commemorate Zola's
residence. He was also closely involved with
the plaque commemorating the home of the
founder of Ottawa, John By, in Bishop's Walk,
Lambeth.
In 1996 Brian turned his attention to Park Hill,
Henry Tate's Grade II* Georgian mansion,
on Streatham Common North, which later
became St. Michael's Convent. When the
Convent was sold in 1999 for redevelopment,
Brian ensured conditions were placed in
the plans to give the public access to the
grounds. The Streatham Society conducts
tours each spring and autumn.
At Streatham Common Brian worked
closely with the Friends on the recent
renovation of the Rookery
Gardens and helped organise
centenary celebrations for
their opening in 2013.
He was a key member
of the Library Working
Group on the
redevelopment of
Streatham Library, and
it was largely through
Brian that the old Tudor
Hall was incorporated
into the redevelopment.
Brian campaigned to
retain the best of Streatham's
heritage, including the facade
of the 1932 Gaumont Cinema which
is to be incorporated into the Megabowl
redevelopment and the frontage of the former
ABC Cinema in Streatham High Road.
At the time of his death Brian was working on
preserving the Dyce Fountain on Streatham
Green - listed through his efforts in 2005, and
four days after he died, restoration began.
Brian worked tirelessly for the benefit of
Streatham, Lambeth and south London. He
will be greatly missed. His leaves a wealth
of friends and colleagues whose spirits were
uplifted by knowing him and whose souls are
enriched by his memory.

Neighbourhood Enhancement Plan for Streatham
LAMbETH COunCiL WAnTS YOuR FEEdbACK
A few weeks ago residents of Streatham
Wells, Streatham South and St Leonards
wards in Streatham will have received a
letter with a post card attached to it asking
residents for some feedback. This is the
consultation form for the Neighbourhood
Enhancement Programme that Lambeth
Council are rolling out in the three wards in
the area.
The programme is funded with £200,000
for each ward and its purpose is to make
improvements to streets and pavements by
the priorities designated by residents in each
ward. The location of improvements will be
in neighbourhood streets, not on TfL priority
roads (High Road, Leigham Court Road,
Greyhound Lane, etc) or in parks.
Examples of improvements that can be
funded are trees along streets, or in cut-ins to
calm traffic, flower, herb or vegetable boxes
to decorate pavements or planting decorative
perennial plants along scruffy railway fences
to brighten an area.
Growing isn't the only option. Street art or
murals by talented youngsters, repair of
dangerous paving or safety improvements at
crime hotspots are possible options as well.
There is a limiting factor in that improvements
must be self-sustainable. A flowerbox,
for example, must be maintained by the
community and projects such as CCTV
or lighting improvements may prove to be
unaffordable on an ongoing basis, so we
need to be mindful of this when we’re giving
feedback on improvements we’d like to see in
our neighbourhoods.
Please do fill out your card if you haven't
already done so, or go online to our webpage
for more information or to submit your
feedback via our survey at: www.lambeth.

HEART STREATHAM contributor LESLEY-
ANN JONES, acclaimed Freddie Mercury
biographer, novelist, and a judge at this
summer's Streatham Festival, worked at
the heart of Fleet Street in its heyday, on
newspapers such as the Daily Mail, Mail on
Sunday, the Sun and the News of the World;
and in the music industry, touring with artists
the likes of Paul McCartney, David Bowie,
Elton John and Queen, for more than two
decades. Having lost count of the number
of times she'd been told 'you should write
a book about your own life!' she has done
just that – but has turned her hair-raising
experiences and the countless eccentric
characters she met and interviewed all over
the world into brilliant fiction.
Her new novel IMAGINE, which
commemorates the 35th anniversary of John
Lennon's death, has already been hailed as
the page-turner of the
year by Queen's Brian
May, Slade's Noddy
Holder, Kim Wilde,
Leo Sayer and
Rick Wakeman –

Streatham Ice Hockey Round Up
bY JuLES CLiFF
REPORT
SPOnSOREd
bY
Streatham Redskins continue to look strong
at third place in what is proving to be an
extremely competitive league this season.
November saw the return of Callum Best, last
season’s league top goal scorer and player of
the year.
Injury has troubled the team over recent
weeks most notably with defender Caz
Britten carrying a significant shoulder injury
and Chris Wiggins suffering a concussion that
has kept him off the ice for a month. But the
team has pulled together and won two out
of the last three home games, most recently
with a satisfying 6-4 win over the London
Raiders. And the good news is that both Caz
and Chris were back in training last week.
Games against the London Raiders always
draw a decent crowd and the November
15th fixture proved no exception. With the
national anthem done, and an impeccably
observed minutes silence for the victims
of the Paris atrocities complete, the much-
awaited London derby began.
An excitable home crowd reveled in the
atmosphere, dancing in the stands to tunes
played during breaks in play. With two goals
each from Kamil Kinkor and Callum Best and
one each from Captain Joe Johnston and
Adam Wood there was much to celebrate!
The London Raiders feature again at home
on Sunday December 6th at 6:45pm and
will be looking to exact some revenge for
previous losses against Streatham, so why
not come along and support the boys?
We take on the Isle of Wight’s Wightlink
Raiders on Sunday 20th December at
6:45pm. There will be a great atmosphere,
snacks and drinks available during the game
and an opportunity to buy some last minute
Streatham Redskins Christmas stocking fillers
in our shop.

Your local park needs you –
now more than ever! Sue McGhie
In June 2013 Lambeth Council announced
the Cooperative Parks Programme giving
local groups the opportunity to take over
management of local parks.
Since the programme was announced, the
Friends of Hillside Gardens Park and Palace
Road Nature Garden (FoHGP) decided an
independent cooperative led by residents and
other stakeholders to manage the park would
provide the most benefit for the park and the
best opportunity to safeguard the park for
future generations. The Friends joined forces
with the Friends of Agnes Riley Gardens
(Poynders Road and Clarence Avenue) to
work out a plan to do this.
This is the same model set up to provide
services in Streatham Common but with
important differences – the plan needs to
work for small parks, with less budget,
and with more than one Friends group at
once. Hard choices from the 2020 Culture
consultation meant budgets for some parks
April 2016 have been cut by over 60% - and
further cuts are expected in 2017.
Nevertheless the Friends have been given
the opportunity to take on responsibility for
the future of the parks and the nature garden.
FoHGP is proud of the parks achieving the
Green Flag award for each of the last five
years and believe they can deliver this and
more for the parks in the future.
We have a draft plan – available on our web
site (see the article on heartstreatham.co.uk)
and would like to receive feedback on our
plans. This is an important time for the future
of parks – an important amenity and vital
community asset for health and well-being.
We hope you will support our plan and we
welcome your involvement in our Friends
groups. A final version of this plan needs
to be submitted in January for approval by
Lambeth Council in order to be ready to start
1 April 2016.
Much has been achieved in the last 15 years
and we now have the opportunity to play and
even more vital role to benefit the parks and
their futures.
A new community-led cooperative - through
a plan developed by local people and to be
operated by and for local people - wants to
provide maintenance for
Hillside Gardens Park, Palace Road Nature
Garden, and Agnes Riley Gardens
Please support our plan. For more

43. Your Local Ward officers have had a busy period
since the our last update. Over the last few
months we have noticed a continued reduction in
Burglaries on all 4 Streatham Wards compared to
last year and the month leading up to Christmas;
however we ask you to be vigilant and remember
to keep your windows and doors locked when
able.
The Streatham High Road officers PCs James
Preston and Francis Stanton have made a
number of arrests ranging from theft to drugs.
One noticeable arrest has lead to a known drug
dealer being remanded in custody awaiting trial
for possession with intent to supply drugs on the
High Road.
The officers will be present during the turning on
of the Christmas Lights in Streatham on the 5th
DECEMBER. Come along and meet them and
introduce yourselves.
On a more serious note please remind the
younger members of your family to think about
security during the dark nights. Below are a few
tips for coming home from work or school.
• Don’t show expensive phones or walk around
with earphones in. Criminals often look for targets
this way. If you need a phone for safety on the
way home, it’s best to have a cheap ‘undesirable’
phone and make sure your devices are registered
on www.immobilise.com
• Plan a safe route home. Ideally one that's well
lit, has CCTV along the way and is busy. Avoid
quiet side roads and or short cuts through parks
when you're alone or isolated. Walk with other
children or trusted adults. All Lambeth Secondary
schools have a dedicated schools officer who can
advise you of the best route home.
• If using the bus avoid the top deck, especially
the back. Nearly all of our juvenile related crime
on buses takes place in this area.
See links to more safety tips when out and about
in our extended articles on www.heartstreatham.

99.5%Whilst some agents charge 2.5% commission on a
property sale, SLM only charge 0.5%. With an average
house price in South London of £456,510*, that
means an extra £9,130.20 in your back pocket.
Combine that with exceptional local knowledge, a
proactive team and a range of additional services that
other agents don’t offer and you’re onto a winner.
