2. Audience Classifications
South Park – Viva
127,000 people viewed this at 09.34pm on Thursday. I think that this program can fit in to
all categories. Not so much for category A given that the humour in it is not for everyone.
The age group for this program would be from 14-45 year olds. The majority of people that
watch South Park are male but some females watch it too.
Top Gear – Dave
326,000 people watched this on Sunday 04.30pm. This program is very popular and it
would fit into every category. I think the age group will range from 10-65 and upwards but
would attract mostly a male audience. The range in age shows why so many people
watched it.
Celebrity Juice – ITV2
2,313,000 people watched this program at 10pm on 16th September and I think that in
would fit into categories from C1 down to D. The humour in this program is certainly not for
those of an old age. The age range for this program would probably be from 15 – 50 and
attracts both male and female audiences.
QI XL – Dave
335,000 viewers watched this on 16th of September would fit into all the categories. This
program is more of an adult aimed humour/comedy so the age range would be from 16-80
and has both male and a female audience.
Hollyoaks – E4
702,000 people watched this on Monday 23rd September at 7.00pm and it will fit into
classes from B to E. This program has mostly attracted the female younger audience so I
think people from 15-39 would watch this.
3. Lifestyles & Psychographics
The magazines people read and the programmes people
watch are all influenced by their upbringing, religion, gender,
age etc.
Programmes and magazines are aimed at specific audiences
and they recognise the types of people that would be
interested in their material. For example, the programme South
Park contains adult humour that some people may find
offensive. Some viewer’s outlook on life may contrast with
some of the jokes that are in that programme.
4. Postcode or Geo-Demographics
Normally, people in a specific area will only be interested in
things going on in they are based. Radio is something that
must give information to audiences in a particular area. TV
programmes like Coronation Street will not be enjoyable to
people that live down south because it will not appeal to them
as much as people that live in the North West. Local news
channels are
5. Sexual Orientation
Gay and lesbian audiences are interested
in material that will satisfy their sexuality.
For example, Gay Times is aimed at the
gay audience and includes things that
they will be interested in. Same for the
lesbian audience, G3 Magazine aimed at
gay/bi women and includes material
suitable for them.
6. Focus Groups
It is a meeting of people to discuss ideas. The ideas are
combined to make TV programmes the best they can be for
the viewers. With this way of making the programmes,
everyone can get their point across to make the TV
programmes better. Whatever is said during these meetings to
discuss what is going to happen is thought through so it is a
great way of making each scene deliver good entertainment
based on what type of programme it is. Whatever is said
during these meetings to discuss what is going to happen is
thought through.
7. Questionnaires
The media industries use questionnaires as a simple way of
classifying their audiences. Surveys can include anything that
they wish to know about their audience. Making questionnaires
effective is important to them so the must ask the right
questions in order to get the best results. They can be done on
paper, but it is a lot easier to be done on the web because it is
sent to them electronically instead of being collected.
8. Ratings
Ratings are a great way for producers to get feedback from
their audience. Ratings are normally shown out of 5 or out of
10. They want to know what they can do to improve so there is
normally a comment that comes with the rating to justify their
opinion. Letting them know what they should do to make their
product better is a great benefit to them given that they have
direct opinions from the consumers.
