L.O: CELESTIAL
OBSERVATIONS, EARTH’S ROTATION
& REVOLUTION, ELLIPTICAL ORBITS
OF THE PLANETS, THE MOON, THE
STARS & THE UNIVERSE.
Celestial means “of the sky”
Celestial objects are
all the objects in the
sky.
(the planets, stars,
moon, sun etc)
All celestial objects appear
to move across the sky at
a rate of 150 per hour.
Viewed from the north polar, all
constellations appear to rotate around
Polaris.
Polaris, here
in the center
EARTH HAS NIGHT AND
DAY BECAUSE IT ROTATES
ON ITS AXIS.
THE SIDE FACING THE SUN
IS “DAY”. THE SIDE AWAY
FROM THE SUN IS “NIGHT”
EARTH
TAKES 24
HOURS
TO
ROTATE!
EARTH
MOVE 15 0
DEGREES
EVERY
HOUR.
150 X 24=
3600
DEGREES
EVIDENCE THAT
EARTH ROTATES:
THE TWO MAIN EVIDENCE OF
EARTH’S ROTATION ON ITS AXIS:
•FOUCAULT’S
PENDULUM
•THE CORIOLIS
EFFECT.
For every hour, the Sun appears to
move 15 0 degrees per hour!
Night and day are caused by
Earth rotating around the sun!!!!!
The seasons:
There are four important days that
you must know. What are they?
There are four important days that
you must know. What are they?
The parts that are “leaning” towards the
SUN get the vertical (direct) rays have
SUMMER
The parts that are “leaning” away from
the SUN get the vertical (direct) rays
have WINTER
What exact day is this? How do you
know?
JUNE 21st, the first day of summer in the
Northern hemisphere. Because the North is
leaning towards SUN!
What day is this? How do you
know?
DECEMBER 21st, first day of winter in
north. Because north leans away from
sun.
THIS DIAGRAM SHOWS THE
SUN’S PATH IN NEW YORK STATE
The Heliocentric
model
The Heliocentric model
• The sun is the
stationary
center. All the
planets including
Earth revolve
around the sun.
The heliocentric model explained
retrograde motion: why planets
appear to wander backwards across
the sky.
The solar system
(planets part 1)
The “solar system”: is the
Sun, the 8 planets, the “dwarf”
planets, all the moons & every other
celestial object that revolves around
Sol.
Planets (pt 2):
Our star system
has 8 planets.
There are two classes
of planets in our solar
system: terrestrial and
jovian.
Terrestrial planets:
• The “earth-like” planets. “Terra” is another
name for Earth.
• Mercury, Venus, Earth & Mars.
• Terrestrial planets are small, “rocky”, high
density & orbit close to the sun.
• Someday, humanity may colonize the other
terrestrial planets for the benefit of
Humankind!
Mercury today
Venus earth’s “twin”
Earth: the
“goldilocks” planet
• Not too hot, not
too cold.
• The only planet
that can have
liquid water on
its surface.
• The only planet
we know that
has life.
Earth moves in two ways:
Rotation:
The Earth spinning on
its north-south axis.
The earth rotates at 150
per hour. After 24
hours, it has turned
3600 (one full turn)
Earth moves in two ways:
Revolution:
The Earth’s slightly elliptical
orbit around the Sun.
The Earth revolves about
10 per day. After 365 1/4
days, it has made a full
orbit around Sol.
Rotation: earth rotates on
its axis.
The 2 main evidence of earth’s
rotation:
1.Foucault's
pendulum
2.The Coriolis effect
a Foucault's pendulum seems to
change directions is one proof of
Earth’s rotation.
The coriolis effect: the winds seem to
curve proof that earth rotates.
Jovian planets
• The “Jupiter-like” planets. Jove was another
name for Jupiter.
• Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
• They are very large, low density, made
completely of gases such as Hydrogen, helium,
methane & ammonia.
• They used to all be called: “the gas giants”
• Jupiter and Saturn are called the “gas giants”
• Uranus and Neptune are the “ice giants”
Jupiter: a failed sun?
Saturn: very low density. Would float in
water!
Uranus
Neptune
Open to ESRT page 15
The sun
• The sun is middle aged main
sequence star. 4.6 billion years
old.
• The sun is powered by nuclear
fusion: Hydrogen atoms fusing
together.
stars
•All stars use nuclear fusion
to “power” themselves.
•Stars come in many colors:
red, yellow (our sun), white,
blue, (& probably brown)
stars
•Stars have different
luminosity (brightness)
•Stars have different
temperatures

Circles &
****ellipses
***The orbits of the planets
are not perfect circles!
a circle is a perfectly round shape with
one central point called a focus
The
focus
This is an ellipse: **an ellipse is a oval
shape with two foci (two “centers”)
ellipses are described as
“eccentric”.
Round but not a perfect circle.
** ellipses have two axes, a **major axis
and a minor axis.
the planets do NOT orbit the sun in perfect circles. The
planets revolve around the sun in elliptical orbits
(oval orbits), with sun being one of the foci.
This is a perfect circle!
This is an oval
This is an oval
Which is more “oval”?
You are now responsible for this
formula.
On the performance part of the regents, you
will calculate the eccentricity of the orbit of
an asteroid….
Celestial objects orbital speed is
fastest when close to the sun.
Gravity: the force of
attraction between bodies.
Larger mass objects have stronger
gravity than smaller mass objects.
Evidence of Earth’s revolving
around the SUN:
•Change in the Sun’s
angular diameter.
•The cyclical seasonal
change in the Zodiac
constellations.
1.Angular diameter:
proof Earth revolves
around the Sun
the sun is very large but looks “tiny”
because it is far away.
Proof #2: that Earth
revolves around the
sun. The yearly change
in the zodiac.
The constellations of the zodiac
appear to move because Earth is
moving around the Sun!!!
Questions: name the two “R”
ways Earth moves.
Earth rotates and Earth
revolves.
Earth rotates
(spins) on its
axis.
The earth rotates
at 150 per hour.
After 24 hours, it
has turned 3600 .
Rotation gives
Earth night and
day
(one full turn)
Revolution:
*Earth revolves around the Sun in
slightly elliptical orbit.
* Earth revolves
about 10 per
day. After 365
1/4 days, it has
made a full orbit
around Sol.
The moon:
The moon is Earth’s
only natural satellite.
The moon is a “satellite” of Earth because it
revolves around Earth.
Similarly, Earth is satellite of the Sun, because
Earth revolves around the SUN!
The moon takes 27 1/3 days to
complete one revolution around
Earth (sidereal month)
These are the Lunar phases:
the Sun’s light rays are always illuminating
one half of the Moon. That is why some
parts look lit & some parts look dark.
As the Moon revolves around Earth,
an Earth observer sees varying
amounts of the illuminated portion of
the Moon.
The Moon takes 29 1/3 days to
complete a phase cycle from one new
moon to the next new moon.(called a
synodic or lunar month)
This is the Earth-Moon system viewed
from space. what phase is A?
what phase is B?
what phase is C?
what phase is D?
what phase is E?
A tide is a rise in the Earth’s water
levels caused by the Moon and Sun’s
gravity.
We have tides because the Moon’s
gravity and the Sun’s gravity are pulling
on Earth’s oceans.
Both the Moon’ and the Sun’s gravity
are pulling on Earth’s oceans ALL the
time…..
Spring tides and
Neap tides:
Spring tides: the Sun and Moon’s
gravity are pulling TOGETHER.
Spring tides happen at the FULL moon
or the NEW moon, when the Sun and
Moon pull together
What do you notice?
The tides are cyclical: a high tide to
low tide is ~ six hours.
*** a high tide to another high tide is
~ 12.5 hours.
*** a high tide to another high tide is
~ 12.5 hours.
A solar eclipse!
An “eclipse” is when the
Sun is blocked by the
Moon or the Earth,
causing a shadow to be
casted.
solar eclipse: the moon blocks
the sun and casts a shadow on
Earth.
solar eclipse: the moon blocks
the sun and casts a shadow on
Earth.
Lunar eclipse:
Lunar eclipse: the Earth blocks the
sunlight and casts a shadow on the
moon.
Eclipses can only be seen over
certain parts of the earth
Eclipses can only be seen over
certain parts of the earth
Eclipses are rare because the
Moon, Earth & Sun must be aligned.
The stars
Astronomers have learned that there
are many kinds of stars!
.
stars with different colors, different
sizes, different luminosities (brightness)
This is the H-R diagram.
The H-R diagram is a graph that plot
the stars’ temperature against their
luminosity.
Open to ESRT page 15.
You are responsible for this page. You
must know how to read it
Luminosity is “brightness”
Surface temperature of stars
As luminosity increases, temperature
increases
color of stars
Mass (size) of stars
Earth's place in
the universe:
During the scienctific revolution (the
renaissance), Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo
& Newton developed the heliocentric
model: which showed that Earth is not the
center of the universe; Earth revolves
around the sun.
By the early 20th century, people
realized that our sun is only one of
billions of other stars in the milky way
galaxy!
definition:
Galaxy: A mass of
billions of stars. Our
home galaxy is called
“the milky way”
A typical spiral galaxy
These are
called
spiral
arms
The universe has countless
billions of galaxies!
definition:
The universe is :All of
existence, all of
creation, everything.
3) The Milky Way Galaxy is in the
Universe
How space distances are
measured:
Space distances are so
vast, new units of measure
had to be created to measure
space distances:
1.The light-year
2.Astronomical units (AU)
The big bang!
The universe is 13.7 billion years old. It
formed in an “explosion” called “the Big
Bang”. How do we know this?
The big bang
theory
Big bang theory
• Developed by astronomers, who built
upon Hubble’s discoveries.
• the Universe formed from a single
infinitely dense particle called a
“singularity” that “exploded” 13.7
billion years ago.
• This explosion is why the universe is
expanding.
Two evidence of the big
bang:
1.***The “red shift” of light.
2.The cosmic microwave
background radiation.
***The red shift of
light:
** a celestial object moving away from
us, shows light waves that are
stretched toward the red end of the
visible light spectrum: “red shifted”
red shifting is the may evidence that
the universe is expanding. The further
an object is from us, the redder it is.
Astronomers know that the universe is
expanding because the galaxies are
red shifting.
before
after
The object is moving away from us
This celestial object has red shifted so
it is moving away from us.
Which is the oldest? Which is the
youngest?
