Josef Mengele was a Nazi officer and physician who performed experiments on inmates at Auschwitz. After the war, he escaped to South America under a false name and lived in Argentina and Paraguay. In 1979, he died of a stroke while swimming in Brazil, where he had been living under the name Wolfgang Gerhard. His remains were not identified until 1985 when German police searching for documents about his whereabouts found his body in his grave.
