In celebration of California’s first annual Harvey Milk Day on Saturday, May 22 the Jewish Community Federation’s LGBT Alliance teamed up with Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, San Francisco City Supervisor Bevan Dufty, and Harvey Milk’s nephew Stuart Milk to create a milkshake simply called a, “Harvey Milkshake.”
As the country’s first openly gay Jewish political leader, Harvey Milk embodied the values of justice and equality that the LGBT Alliance seeks to promote. The Harvey Milkshake was sampled on Saturday afternoons in May 2010 in San Francisco’s Castro District.
The Goldfader Dufty Family, Karen Bluestone, John Slater and folks at the LGBT Alliance helped conceive of the flavor and taste-test the recipe for the Harvey Milkshake at Ben & Jerry's Haight Ashbury Store.

1. Ben & Jerry's Shakes Things up with The Harvey Milkshake
Effort to honor San Francisco activist launches on Harvey Milk Day this Saturday, May 22nd
San Francisco – Move over Hubby Hubby. There’s a new Ben & Jerry’s item out that is
sure to be a deliciously successful follow up to the renaming of Chubby Hubby ice
cream to Hubby Hubby last year.
Local franchisee John Slater wanted to use his Ben & Jerry’s franchise as a conduit to
take a stand and support a cause. The result? A new menu item, The Harvey
Milkshake, to raise awareness and focus on the late Bay Area activist Harvey Milk.
“We approached the LGBT Alliance and co-developed this new concoction in honor of
slain San Francisco activist and supervisor, Harvey Milk,” stated Ben & Jerry’s
franchisee John Slater. “We are proud to launch it on what would have been Harvey
Milk’s 80th birthday and California’s first annual Harvey Milk Day this Saturday, May
22nd,” added Slater. A portion of proceeds from sales of The Harvey Milkshake at the
Ben & Jerry’s Haight Ashbury scoop shop will benefit the LGBT Alliance.
“As the country’s first openly gay Jewish political leader, Harvey Milk embodied the
values of justice and equality that the LGBT Alliance seeks to promote,” said Lisa
Finkelstein, Director of the LGBT Alliance.
The Harvey Milkshake contains the following ingredients:
• Harvey Milk & Cookies ice cream – the Activ-ism ingredient
• Bittersweet chocolate – when we think of having lost Harvey
• Cinnamon with dash of nutmeg/allspice – Harvey was spicy and fabulous!
• A touch of sea salt – a Jewish symbol for tears
• Whipped cream – Harvey knew how to whip up the community
• Rainbow sprinkles – pride in our diversity!
• A maraschino cherry – Harvey’s activism bore fruit! Look how far we’ve come!
Ben & Jerry’s and the LGBT Alliance worked diligently to perfect the recipe and receive
the support of many important San Francisco leaders including San Francisco City
Supervisor Bevan Dufty and Harvey’s nephew Stuart Milk.
“Anytime you can celebrate love between any two people it is a wonderful thing," said
Ben Cohen, one of the two Ben & Jerry’s Co-Founders who reside in Vermont, the state
that legalized same sex marriage in September 2009.
2. About Ben & Jerry’s
Ben & Jerry’s produces a wide variety of super-premium ice cream and ice cream

states its position on rBGH on its labels. Ben and Jerry’s products are distributed
nationwide and in selected foreign countries in supermarkets, grocery stores,
convenience stores, franchise Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shops, restaurants and other
venues. Ben & Jerry’s, a Vermont corporation and wholly-owned subsidiary of Unilever,
operates its business on a three-part Mission Statement emphasizing product quality,
economic reward and a commitment to the community. The goal of the social mission is
to integrate a concern for the community into as many day to day business operations
as possible while maintaining the product and economic missions. The recent
announcement to move to all available Fair Trade ingredients by the end of 2013 is
driven by that commitment. For more visit www.benjerry.com.
* The FDA has said no significant difference has been shown and no test can now distinguish between milk from rBGH treated cows and untreated
cows. Not all the suppliers of our other ingredients can promise that the milk they use comes from untreated cows.
