-Good Morning! Lisa and I are both happy to be here this morning to talk about one of our favorite subjects Networking. -Networking more important new work paradigm requires career management. Switch jobs more frequently due to project based world -Not just out of a job but to network for new opportunity when you have one. -The Social Media Tools available help us network on an ongoing basis -There is a multitude of networking strategies out there that most of you know either through workshops, books, and articles. -Lisa and I decided to focus our talk this morning on what we felt most of our clients either ignore, not spend enough time on or stumble through in the networking process. Thus, not effectively networking. Our topic cutting your job search time by leveraging a hi-touch approach is what we believe will dramatically cut your search time, ignite and expand your network as well as help you run a more interesting and effective job search. My focus will key into important aspects of pre-networking strategies and Lisa will focus more on the networking process.
-The Heart and core of the networking begins with how you feel about yourself at this point in time. A High Touch Approach! -Networking requires all forms of communication. It is very difficult to communicate our “Best Self” when we aren’t feeling up to snuff! -Our ability to reach out to others is hindered --Our verbal tone, and what we say can come across as negative --The way we carry ourselves is not approachable by others -How and what we write about ourselves -Is all impacted by how we feel. -Critical to our networking success. And needs to be addressed.
-So, lets take a look at someone when they first find out they lost their job. -Immediate reaction, even if they knew it was coming. -Wired this way-think about a sweater lost? -Not a good time to network! -How long will it last? -When do we know we are out of it? -So, if you are networking during ea big emotional wave time this will greatly negatively impact your communication and search effectiveness. -So, what can we do to control it
Strategies that help Realize that bad things happen to people and organizations. In the valley it’s not a question of if you are laid off but when Understand what happened and learn from it Come to learn how it is a business decision Don’t let your feelings distract you from what your goals are in your life. Leverage your time right now to generate new opportunity in your life right now.
-Close your eyes and imagine that you are telling someone why you are looking for a job. -By taking this Hi-Touch approach by dealing with feelings improves how you can invite contacts in to your job search. -Remember contacts won’t refer, Hiring Managers won’t hire.
-It always amazes me when I work with many successful clients when I ask them to create a quick positioning statement which basically answers the question why someone should hire you that they can’t articulate and identify their value. They attached they value to a job not attributing value to themselves. -This is critical for successful networking. This is what ignites and expands your network. -Must perceive your own value separate from the job that goes with you not leave behind. -How can you identify your strengths? Performance reviews, look for patterns. -What was it that you did in your job that made you successful. The job you did was successful because of what you put into it. -Now it’s time to identify your added value. -Exercise-Turn to person next to you and ask them to “tell me about yourself” e.g. positioning statement in 15 seconds. And then reverse and ask the question back. -Are you able to express your value. If so, this ignites and expands your network
-Evaluate the current marketplace -Identify relevant roles that leverage your value that exist in enough demand. -Have you decided how you are going to stand out from the competition? -The job posting is your competition! -All this pre-networking work helps in distinguishing yourself in the market.
-Whether you realize it or not, you leave impressions wherever you go. In other words you already have some sort of a brand. -Want to be known for something-that’s how you stand out in somebody’s mind.
